I was thinking that, and why not a single ridge beam. Looking at the final result, I wonder if it's been designed to suit its intended purpose and general architectural delight. It does look fantastic though.

Yeah, I think the architect was trying to put his stamp on it. It worked out very expensive per/m. Things like the conservation Velux, the plinth and the brick detailing etc, bumped up the costs considerably...
These are exterior design features that possibly improve the appearance/add interest or are perhaps required by Planning in the case of conservation rooflights , but you don't expect to have larger than structurally necessary steel beams which most likely will be encased and not visible.
