i don't know where they get there figures from
"microwave 35% saving" so we are only talking power on standby as no one removes the food and turns on an empty microwave so we are talking perhaps 1-10w 1w is approximately £1 at 12p a unit over a whole year up to £10 at 10w

an iron will be say 1200w and on a medium heat setting will average say 400w if just left on
now assuming you check on average every 3 to 5 hours thats around 1.5 units or 18p at 12p a unit per use assuming they remember to turn it off every other time and its used 6 times a week thats 50p a week or £26 over the whole year

of course its all assumptions on my part
the actual may be far less or far more only you can tell but it gives you an idea whats involved

but a point to note down lighters with normal bulbs will waste far more power than all your problem items put together
if you have say 10 down lighters with 50w bulbs and they are on for an average 10hrs a day thats 5kw/60p a day or £200 a year or with led equivalent 7p a day or £24 a year

sorry that should be 5kw a day so abouve corrected

While I agree with your comments big-all, I think the problem being experienced by the OP was more to do with his better half 'testing' his house insurance policy on a regular basis.

ok sideways thinking
a bright light to draw attention
as in an extension or socket with a table lamp hard wired [and fused as appropriate]
switch on the wall at waist height the only way to turn the socket on and the only way to turn the annoying light off

just a thought:cool:

One DIY (bit of a bodge) technique could be to plug in a two way unswitched trailing extension lead, cable tie a table lamp/nightlight etc into one of the sockets and then allow your wife to use the other for her straighteners
