Hi,
our pull cord switch got stuck and need to replace it. The new one we got had has no clear L1 or COM reference. Does it mean it doesn't matter how do I connect them? (except the earth wire which is obvious)

Its just a switch , as its pull it doesn't matter which way the switch works... in a wall switch you would want off to be up and on to be down when you toggle the switch ( just convention)

The version I've handled looking like those have been clamped againts a metal plate, the tricky bit I found was being able to rock the button so it only released one side.

Assuming it's not a 2-way switch then it will make no difference to whether it's switched "on" or "off" which terminals the conductors are connected into.
