Does anyone have any suggestions for a quieter alternative to an angle grinder for prepping metal prior to welding?

Prefer it to be cost effective as grinding wheels and flap discs for angle grinders last a fair bit. My cheap 4.5 inch grinder is very noisy 100db.

100 db at one meter?

Does the sound come from the metal, the disk on metal interface or the motor? How much does reduced speed reduce the noise intensity?

Ear defenders are always worn just other neighbours should try them.

The noise is measured close by but all grinders are 90+, I don't have a variable speed grinder didn't know they done them. This is just the running of the grinder held in hand not in use.

Not sure if air grinders are any quieter

Maybe it's gear noise or else a high rate of airflow through the machine for cooling.
The maker may not mind loud noise, it gives the impression of power.

Air grinders are somewhat quieter, but the mains angle grinder is the tool for the job. Flap discs aren't any use for weld prepping.

Warm handle? Do they mean wood handle or a handle that does not conduct heat away from your hand? :D

Did you try to weld the joints without grinding?

Plastic, not damaged by oil products.
