Quote for new boiler

£ 2800 labour for 4 days work... that's 700 per day...nearly £ 100 per hour...(lunch break?)

There are hopefully some plumbers out there who will charge an hourly rate less than that; even in London.

Maybe find a Corgi person with the best hourly rate, pay them for how long it takes. If they are nervous about underquoting , they will no doubt inflate the figure to cover theat risk. But as long as they don't waste time or re-do work they did wrong, then paying by the hour might be cheaper, no? Especially on a complicated job. It seems that the words "replace boiler" sets off a 'kerrchink' sound with dollar signs spinning in their eyes. Shouldn't matter what they are doing; a reasonable hourly rate is a reasonable hourly rate. £ 100 per hour seems like a great figure if you are at the receiving end, but should anyone really get paid enough to buy a new car every week?

Uh oh, here goes the political / marxist / socialist / Corgi overheads thread...

So you know the spec of the boiler, controls, chemicals and pipework that will be required!!!!

I doubt it because if you can get a vaillant 831,flue,etc for £700 inc VAT then you had better share this with us all.

Obviously not, but my point is that if there are so many variables & unknowns, then a reasonably honest plumber would be able to offer a better deal to customer by charging by the hour, rather than a fixed quote.

I will ask my friends in Paris and Berlin how much they pay to fit a combi. I am curious to know. Does anyone else?

What on earth relevance does that have to any installation costs here

seems i'm the cheapest...will have to up my rates...or is it that leicester folk are mean with their money

many thanks guys for all the comments.i take the average is about £2500 to £3000.
the guy who gave me the quote said the boiler itself will cost arount £700 but it is the installation that makes it expensive ie £3500. my post code is Rm13 essex so i would like to think it will be slightly cheaper here than in proper London.
anyway as a few people said, the best thing to do is to get one or two more quotes and compare.

Nowadays everyone knows the price of everything, because it can be googled.

For DIYers it may surprise them to learn that they can probably procure the bits and pieces used in their boiler install at pretty much the same prices we pay, although we buy £500K and they buy £2K.

The differences between quotes are;

-The ability of the surveyor/sole trader to design and scope the best system for the customers needs

-The ability of the surveyor/sole trader to note the likely difficulties in the installation and allow enough time and materials to overcome them

-The knowledge, care, ability and skill of the people carrying out the work. Thanks to the media, and lowering training standards this industry is awash with recently fast track trained no hopers.

- The back up and support from the company (or individual) carrying out the work, and their relationship with the boiler manufacturer (very important if warranty work is required).

People seem to think that all boiler installations will be the same - you only have to look at some of the work out there to see that there is a World of difference in standards. Beware.

a bit expensive if you were in leicester...we are doing one today and tomorrow...power flush, 6 trv, magnaclean, old cylinder out and baxi duotec 28 combi into the airing cupboard - £2250

We payed 4150 for:

9 new radiators and a Myson Kickspace.
Remove old system.
Extend existing gas line to new location.
Yorkshire mistral TRV'S on radiators.
2 zone valves. (2 heating zones)
Chemical clean of system.
Vaillant ecoTEC+ 937.
Programmer. (VRT360f which has been replaced with a Honeywell CM927 because it didn't work with the zoning).
Boiler in airing cupboard.

thanks David and simon.in my case they are installing only the boiler.i am using the already installed radiators but they will clean then them.i have to admit i am not entirely sure of the model of boiler apart from the fact that it is a vailant combi and has to be powerful enough to heat eleven radiators in a 3 bed house which has been extended at the back.
also the boiler will now be based in the downstairs toilet so the will run a new gas line but there is hot water cold water already in the toilet.

Worth reminding David (who appears to have named himself after his boiler) that his installer had no knowledge of Vaillant boiler controls.

Consequently the system he has quoted the installation price for, did not work correctly from the outset and he had to resort to other methods of getting it regularised.

He has had a lengthy dialogue on this forum ascertaining the best way to resolve the debacle he was left with, that was all resolved by more knowledgeable installers/maintainers on this forum.

In consequence he had to ditch some of the controls and buy others. Most private owners would have been stumped or duped in this scenario.

An excellent example of my point. If you want a job done properly, get someone who knows what they are doing.

If you want to pay less, take your chances.

point well taken Simon.i take you have done some similar jobs in the rainham Rm13 area. any ideas what you will charge for this kind of job( looking at my first post?)

The system only had one problem which was the zoning. I would not blame the installer for this because he was a Worcester accredited installer. We wanted a Vaillant boiler, they had no objections and fitted it for us. They told us that they use Worcester because they had more experience with those boilers however they still believe that Vaillants are good boilers.

The company did give us good service, the salesman who surveyed the property done all the heat loss calculations, measured flow rates and recognized our high hot water demand. After installation was completed the Benchmark sheet was filled out, installation was registered with Corgi and they also registered the guarantee for us.

We did not pay until we were 100% satisfied.

Sorry, we don't cover your area.

I find quotes or even estimates without seeing the job have no value whatsoever, they just mislead people.

No two houses are the same (unless you are doing a new build major development).

So I never discuss pricing unless I have.... seen the property, met the owner and discussed their requirements.....gone back to the office, costed all the materials and labour on my spreadsheet.

The I have an exact quote, listing and picturing all the main components and usually a five year warranty.
