Can anyone recommend any good training courses and/or books on installing turbine and pv generated supplies. (domestic / light commercial & ind.)

Very keen to be able to offer this technology to potential customers

forgive me for saying so but solar lecy is not worth it yet, and wind needs a decent turbine, not the piddly little waste of money things B & Q sell
 
Cheers Kevin, will try them. Seen the crap at B&Q!!! Have been looking on the web and seen a range of suppliers and fitters.

The reason i'm quite keen is a friend of mine keeps asking and is keen to have a turbine fitted, he has an wide panaroma at the rear of his place and he and I feel it would probably be ideal for such an install.

why not ask your mate, what he would expect to pay for a wind turbine. (not a B & Q thing) and post it here, no seriously, ask him.

I really think this "renewable energy" thing for domestics is a waste of time and money. No really.

Looking at that link, you may save £200/pa on your lecy, depending how much it costs but you will probably have to pay £10k for windmill.

The b & q one was something like £5k (installed) it worked out you will break even after 10 years then its all profit, great, trouble is the unit was only gteed for 5 years

and using the other sites stats, £200 year means you wont make money for 25 years

similar with photo panels, they call them different names but none are efficaint yet. and what do we not have ? sunshine and lots of it, today it rained and hail stoned, no use is it? last month it snowed (covers panel and blocks feeble sun)

they are all good in theory, but unless you have lots of money to buy big stuff, forget it for now.
 
I've extensively researched adding Photo-Voltaic cell installation to my portfolio and i've come to this conclusion, wait until the technology comes of age, they haven't even got straight the certificaltion processs yet!

As for wind, forget it, the turbulance generated by your, and other houses/trees nearby makes a small turbine completely unviable, and technology won't get over that.

I do think Breezer is being a bit negative - maybe the payback is a long time, but there are plenty of engineering projects which take decades to start making a profit. And you can't use the same £200 saving because with bigger turbines you don't just save electricity you make it and flog it to the grid.

What's needed are greater incentives for people to make the initial investment - as energy prices rise the payback date gets closer, and it's not hard to envisage the situation where it adds value to your property if the buyer can see significant running cost savings. And then come the day they introduce a personal carbon allowance, which sooner or later they will have to....

You do need a lot of wind to make a turbine viable, or a big turbine, But for the average person a big turbine is out of the question both on the cost / payback time, and where are you going to put it? and a small one will be too small to be of much use. (also the average house holder is not "an engineering project")

If you look at the link shown (not by me) it shows average wind speeds, they are not vey good, and like most people the truth is in housing areas is really not that constantly windy.

If i lived in say 5 acres of open land it, i could have a monster sized turbine, which may be worth it, lots of open space, but as i said i dont, and neither do most people. So wind turbines are not worth it for the average domestic person.

electric solar panels similar thing, they are not yet really efficiant enough to be worth while for mr and mrs average, also where do you put them? oh, on the roof, and what if your roof is not south facing?

It would need a roof size quantity for you to be in with a chance, do you have that much space in your garden? i dont.

I am just being truthful, give it some years and yes the efficancy should improve, but right now, no thanks.

I agree with Breezer, he is being honest. Wind power will not be viable until there is no alternative source. On the coldest day the wind speed was zero for most of the country. And in strong winds turbines have to be shut down to prevent damage.

When an un-named executive of a wind powered electricity supply company says that a wind farm can be "run" at a profit if it only ever produces 5% of it rated capacity then the economics of building wind farms is questionable.

And small domestic ones will never pay back the investment unless they are the alternative to the expense of a new mains supply being installed.
 
I recently fitted a turbine and the thing only produced 500watts at the best of times! If memory serves we got it at cost price of £1500. Suppose it's enough for some lights in a bungalow, shame I installed it on a big warehouse/office block
