Recessed spotlights in bedroom

Hi folks,

Are spotlights in a bedroom relatively simple to install (for a DIYer)?

At the moment there is one cable feeding the ceiling pendant. I'd like to install four spotlights and remove the pendant.

Any advise welcome

Just my opinion. I'm not a huge fan of recessed lighting.

Hopefully, some others will be along to offer theirs.

Think very carefully before changing to recessed lights.

Then think very carefully where to fit them AFTER deciding where the furniture is going to be.

Imagine waking up and shining a bright torch into you or you partner's eyes. That is what happens if the light is over the head of the bed.

Or fragments of an exploding halogen landing on a priceless piece of furniture.

suppose even next year you want to move the bed round and the lights are now in the wrong place.

there is how ever an idea

get a large sheet of mdf (size is up to you) fit flush mini spotlights to this, hang it from ceiling cia chains, connected by flex to existing ceiling rose.

mdf does not have to be square or oblong, it could for example be painetd pale bule with whitef fluufy edges and be a closu, or it could be yellow and round ad be the sun, you get the idea.

when you get fed up you unhook it and put old pendant back

What is your ceiling made of - lathe and plaster or plasterboard? If it's lathe and plaster you will have great fun installing the lights as it's a pain in the rear to cut out your holes neatly and it often disintegrates leaving you with a big hole to fill.

Just finished a job last week where the client asked me to TAKE OUT about 30 recessed lights and replace with central fittings - oh joy, I think have reached the turning point, thank god!

I don't know what size your room is but I suspect that you will need more than four. I replaced a fitting with three R80 spots with a new fitting holding four minispots. The room is now badly lit as the spots have a narrower focus. I was going to fit a few downlighter spots until I found out how hard it would be to run the cables in a ceiling with no access other than a hatch in one corner. There is a flat roof above most of the room so I can run cables down only one joist channel from the hatch. Also, the room used to be well enough lit with ONE 100 watt lamp until I started to get "stylish".

From another thread today you will see that it may be impossible to get replacement bulbs in two years anyway!

It's a bedroom. You only need a light to see your way to the bed. A torch would suffice.

Low energy downlighters. They have a wider beam and use a fifth of the energy. And WILL be available in 2 years
