Redundant Ceiling Pendant - Help!

:confused: Hi

I have knocked down some walls to make two rooms into one.

A toilet and a utility room are now going to be the main bathroom.

I have been left with the following;

The old utility room had FOUR cables to ceiling pendant.

The old toilet room had THREE cables to ceiling pendant.

Utility Room = ROOM A

Toilet = ROOM B

I will be installing eight 50w 12v IP65 halogen fittings/lamps,
with individual transformers.

(I understand and have read/taken advise from you guys regarding
insulation/fire hazard & building regulations).

MY QUESTIONS

One of these pendants will now be redundant.

From the diagram below could you please advice which pendant
would be best to connect the 12v downlighters to?

1) Would it be best to use ROOM A or ROOM B ?

2) Whichever one I use I assume that I place all wiring
in suitable JB ?

3) The circuit that these 2 pendants are wired into is for the downstairs.

I had to install a new ceiling, so I have removed all the connections
from the pendants rejoined them in a choc box and taped up - then
pushed everything up into the loft area,
and now plasterboarded across the old holes.

SWITCH for above was a pull cord - I didn't make a note of this.

You`ve lost me with the description of the Wiring for the 2nd Room , But having a 3 Core & Earth (includes Yellow cable) , I`m guessing this Room has a Fan in it ? , if thats the Case you`ll need to use this on so the Fan will still work ??

The Fan if timed will have a Permanent Live , a Switched Live a Neutral and an Earth (usually unused at the Fan)
The Cables for this should go from the Ceiling Rose to a Three Pole isolater then to the Fan or Transformer then fan if LV.

You are a very bad man.

Insulation tape will peel off in time, and the choc block will have no strain relief for the cables.
Go and buy a 4-terminal junction box, or one of those choc boxes and do it properly.

You have four cables for Room A - normally there would be two for the loop and one for the switch wire - can you determine where the fourth one goes- possibly a shaver socket?

As Luckyphil mentioned for Room B given the colours of the conductor cables either there is an extractor fan or you have a two way with another switch/lamp or something else.

What worked with each switch before the great 'undivide'.

ROOM A didn't have a fan BUT the way the rooms were set up meant that you would turn on the old utility
room light to get to the old toilet room - and then also turn on the toilet light (so unless you wanted to walk
in the dark there would be two lights on - utility & toilet). Possibly the forth wire was feeding the toilet fan.

TAYLORTWOCITIES;

The tape is only a temporary measure, so I could get the new ceiling up - when the LV lights arrive I'll get back
up there and sort it out correctly.

I was going to use IP65 throughout so they would all match - am I right in saying it is the fittings that are
IP65 rated
and not the bulb? - I would buy correct zone units if I could match them all.

BAN-ALL-SHEDS;

I've worked it out to 400 watts for an even spread of light - I will buy bulbs with a wide degree beam.
The new room is 9m2 - lights will probably be via the dimmer most of the time. For a simple life I wanted two
modern pendant lights - the wife wanted downlighters - go figure!

SHERBERTLION;

I was going to see if I could find a sealant (between lamp fitting and plasterboard) that would help with
moisture rising up into loft - but I'm not sure if sealants will withstand the heat. I will be buying a decent
inline fan.

RIVERALT;

When I get back up in the loft I will find out where all the cables are ending up - just to be sure.

I suspect you worked it out to 8 lights to get an even-ish spread of light, even with "wide beam" lamps.

How bright would a 9m² room be with 4 x 100W pendants?


the wife wanted downlighters - go figure!
Keep the little plasterboard discs to use for repairs - she may have absolutely no idea how horrible the light will be.
