Do you know how to double declutch; that'll test if the synchro gears have gone. If not, then the linkage may need adjusting

Another test is to see if you can get second with the engine off.....if you can see the linkage moving, try to move it a little more.
I have had issues with selector forks coming undone, but other gears were affected too......another one was where an indent ball had jumped out and preventing the selector rods from reaching full travel. Either way, it's a box out though
John :)

unbelievable it worked thankyou thankyou thankyou what a relief but still don't know what caused it

The gearbox will still have to come out to get the synchro gears replaced, but you've got an initial answer. Have a chat with a couple of gearbox repair specialists, but make sure you get a good recomendation first.

is it safe to drive?

Yes. When cars were first invented, there were no synchor gears, so you had to double declutch. But it'll need dealing with at some time.

Can you change the oil on this box? Wouldn't do any harm and something might fall out to give you a clue as to the problem - ie a part of a syncro hub on my old Rover....

Easy to change the oil on these......squared female plug on the bottom and a white filler / level plug on the front.
I used to be able to get gearbox bits easily from specialists but haven't done one for years.....wouldn't know where to look now. The easiest box to do was the FWD Cavalier.....you could change the clutch and remove the gearbox internals from under the O/S wheel arch . Brilliant design, never copied.....often wondered why.
John :)
