Hi

Having an Oak pitched roof porch built, and an adjoining canopy roof over an adjoining window built.

The carpenter wanted to work on a day rate (as he said hard to price) it has so far taken three days longer then he thought, but the guy has really worked hard, till 7pm one night! On a day rate it's clearly my risk so I was happy to pay the extra days.

However, he has built the porch 6" lower than the wall plate can go for the window canopy, so when the two meet it looks awful! the fascia does not meet on the canopy and the porch roof. also the gallows brackets on the canopy are too big!

The joints on the porch are very good, all pegged, glued and hand made.

He now wants his money, thoughts?

Is it far to make him do it right? the cost would be >£1,000, which does not seem fair, but it looks awful and not as it should be!

thanks

Sounds like the guy hasn't known how to go about the job, regardless he's responsible for putting it right so don't pay until your happy with the job. By the way I would state clearly he won't get any day rates for putting things right. To get paid any tradesman has to do the job right, to the customers satisfaction...pinenot :)

Was this project designed? Did you have a drawing that he could follow?

Was there any discussion along the way or did these anomalies just appear once everything was finished?

Thanks for your replies,

Drawing was provided, we specifically specified (but verbally before he started) that the fascia and soffit had to meet each other, if nothing else for guttering!

He simply did not seem to realise until it was built, it was cut in the garage and only finally assembled in position, which is when we asked him to mock up the fascia, then it emerged!

Only problem is the cost to replace the Oak is £600, and another 6 days to make is much more than we owe him (we owe 4 days) he wanted some money after day two.

Just talk to him. Tell him want you wanted and how its different and work together...

If he is a professional he'll want to put it right. He isn't just getting a few days money, he'll be getting a trusting customer, word of mouth/recommendation. If not, he loses a few hundred pounds and a shoddy job that everyone can see with his name to. £600 is nothing compared to bad press and/or even legal action.

+ 1 to that...pinenot :)
