Hi, my kicthen extractor stopped working, I got a new one, but am I able to DIY or do i need to get a certificate, the regs seem unclear as to work in the kitchen and bathroom, I'll need to run a small 10" extention from the existing wire.
Thanks
Woz

kitchen is not a special location like a shower or bathroom (etc...)
If you mean whether you need to notify the council, you don't. I write a certificate to every job (in this case it will be a Minor Works) but do not notify all of them.
The extension of the cable falls into the part of "replacing a damaged cable" if you whish and this is not notifiable.
I would be very careful with the way the cable extension is done, the best way is to crimp the two part of the cable (with a ratchet crimper) and insulate with shrinking sleeve.

Yes it is.
Well as far as Part Pee is concerned.

Personally I don't think the replacement of the hood requires notification.

Sorry you are right the kitchen is a special location

Now you're both wrong, a Kitchen is a Kitchen, not a special location nor a special installation.
Some differences are you can install a telephone point or ELV alarm in a kitchen but not in a special location without notification. Replacing on a like for like is generally non-notifiable even in a special location, kitchen or special installation.

I stand corrected. Kitchens are not listed as special locations.

Did they used to be in a previous revision of document P?

No, it is just a myth
It is only when you start reading the law, it says the special locations are only those in BS7671 that it all becomes clear.

In the "Electrician's Guide to the Building regs" page 56 explains about the kitchen status. As mentioned by spark123 it is not a normal room either.

yes BS 7671 defines special locations.
Part P defines special installations
and part P referes to Special locations, special installations and kitchens
Hard work innit? I think I got it right but someone will no doubt put me right.

I believe Americans passed a law a few years back declaring a tomato a vegitable even though it`s really a fruit. Suppose they`ll pass a law that black is white too.

there`s a rumour going round that Michael Jackson is getting back together
