I have always filled the gear box / drive thing up with multi-purpose - what should i be using

and the ends of the drills, they are always filthy with grease - does it make its way there from the gearbox (the gearbox / drive thing does get empty - so it must be going somewhere

I don't know the answer but the following might shed some light

You are supposed to add a little grease, to the bit, where it goes in the chuck. I'm not fastidious about doing it, but often I wipe the bit clean, and lightly dip the bit in the grease. I have three sds, and two of them came with tubs of grease. The tubs last forever. Greasing, seems to help the hammer action.

As to where it goes, it runs down the bit on my drill; heat and vibration make it less viscous and encourage it to run out

Yep. It's cheap; I'd rather too much than too little, let it wash out any crap in the chuck too
