Self Drive Demo

Nice video; but I'm sure someone's going to get stop the driver in the next car from getting back in. I've seen one from Ford, so they've got it already, but you'e not allowed by law to have the cars engine on, and no one in the car, so that's why it hasn't been released yet. But it's amazing how many peple get out of the car and leave the engine going whilst they pop in to the shop. The worst one I saw, was the girl who left her baby in the back seat, and when I pointed out the dangers, started shouting at me that she'd do the person that drove her car away. Which then brings us round to the easiest way to cut down on emmisions, is to actively ban any motorist (mainly taxi drivers and council lorries) from just sitting there with their engines running.

There is an argument about proper control and driving without due care, but the specific legislation about engine on, is about being parked, not driving..

Its not so black and white with electric cars. Since you don't leave the engine running, so http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1986/1078/regulation/98/made wouldn't apply.

I guess you are still at odds with the http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2003/2695/regulation/2/made given its done with a phone app.

Its possible that the self drive/parking feature is intended for your private land. but they claim :

Using Summon, once you arrive home and exit Model S or Model X, you can prompt it to do the rest: open your garage door, enter your garage, park itself, and shut down. In the morning, you wake up, walk out the front door, and summon your car. It will open the garage door and come to greet you. More broadly, Summon also eliminates the burden of having to squeeze in and out of tight parking spots. During this Beta stage of Summon, we would like customers to become familiar with it on private property. Eventually, your Tesla will be able to drive anywhere across the country to meet you, charging itself along the way. It will sync with your calendar to know exactly when to arrive.

Sorry . Having a bit of an angry day . I can imagine a self parking car parking so close to a normal car that the driver won't be able to get in and/or will open their door and leave a nice "ding" in the side of the self parker.

Well the guy in the cheaper car may feel better cause he's damaged something he can't afford. The guy in the self parker won't give a crap cos it's only money and he's got plenty. Win win I'd say (y)

Will self-drive cars work in Devon?

Having read the initial link, it seems to imply that you have to switch the engine off in order to reduce noise, but the police that I've spoken to, refer to the offence of "quitting", whereby you leave the engine running, so with the car no longer being atended to, you are no longer in control of it. And that's the legislation that's got to be amended. As to Tesla suggesting the car can be parked in the garage on private property, I suspect they are attempting to overcome current legislation, except someone got prosecuted recently for being drunk in charge of their vehicle whilst it was on their driveway, so all bets are off. I don't think the second link is applicable to the aregument, as no one is in the car to use their mobile phone; ford showed a button on the remote being used to self park the car, whereas Teslas idea would obviously need a mobile phone linked via buetooth to work - but you'd be outside the car when you use it.

Yup, they'll develop a protocol whereby a signal is transmitted to any other vehicles in the area, to check or notify, that they are about to enter a restricted road. But I suspect the maps would need some serious updating, expscially looking at the way lorries get stuck.

The more expensive driverless cars will be programmed to believe they have priority and not to give way.

I suspect there will be an agreed standard, but I like you're thinking. With the recent VAG emmissions scandal, and can see a degree of truth in your post.

There'll be a market in having your car chipped to self drive more aggressively and not to give way. Otherwise what would be the point in having a BMW?

For some, it's a fast car, for most, it's a status symobol showing how much money you've got. Doubt if you'll be able to chip the cars, but never say never I suppose. On the other hand, As we're already getting so many average speed cameras, I'm sure they'll integrate that fucntions into the cars GPS to make sure you can't chip the car.

Presumably your car won't be able to exceed the speed limit?
Do you think having a BMW etc shows you have money? It's not what you've got, it's what you own that matters. I used to watch Posh Pawn on Ch 4 or 5 and you'd have these people living in luxury, flash cars, big houses in Weybridge etc etc and yet they have to pawn some prized possession to raise a few £K. Sad.
