i am about to lay a solid wood floor in a new build property , i am cautious of removing current skirting from the walls as they are more than likely glued, has anyone got any experiences from this , and if so . problems, etc . regards chris

first, you need to break the seal between the top of the skirting and the wall. this can be done by running a sharp knife along the join.

hopefully, this will prevent any plaster being removed above the skirting line.

remove the skirting. any damage behind the skirting can be dealt with when you re-fit.

never ever fit flooring without removing the skirting board first.

And if you find the skirting was nailed to the wall and not glued, PULL the nails right through the skirting with a pair of pliers, don't hammer them back out the way, or you will damage the face of the skirting. You can re-nail them back on again with no problems. All common sense really, but i've seen a few architraves/skirtings ruined by people hammering the nails back out the wrong way.

... and if they are glued.... prise them off the wall... remove the dried glue, trim them to accomodate your new floor and refit them, nailing them to the timber studs... (any damage from the glue will be hidden). Punch the nails and fill with woodfiller - then paint !! Jobsagoodun !
