I have a 1930s sarked, hipped, slate roof with mortared ridge and hip ridge tiles. The roofing felt is not the best under the first two slate courses and I want to install eave protectors (felt support trays) to improve matters. I understand the need for a ripper to remove the slate nails but am concerned about how to remove those slates that are under the hip ridges. Do I have to remove the hip ridge tiles or can I rip the slates without worrying about the slates' movement affecting the hip ridge tile and its mortar.

Cheers

It is possible to remove the slates with a ripper but much easier to remove the hip tile to get the trays in and renail slates.

you may be able to leave the hip slates in and slide the eave protector in ?
