Looking for recommendation for small cheap runaround suitable for a tall person with a bad back to get in & out of. Thanks for any advice.

Depends what you call small?
And what do you call cheap?
And how tall?
Are you talking new, second hand, budget etc?

These days, a Mini is certainly not what I'd call small, they are huge!
A Nissan Note has ISTR plenty of headroom.

Something standing higher off the ground like a small SUV.

Sorry I should have said, 6' 6". Low running costs & being able get in & out more important than purchase price or age. Tried several Fords but only the Kuga was any good & unfortunately it was far too big for my needs.

If you are tall why does it need to be small? Limited size parking spot?

Does not have to be small to be economical , some large family cars have small 1.2l engines.
Same skills required to drive any size car .

A Yeti is smaller than Kuga.

Yeti is 4223 long, Kuga is 4443.

Yeti is 1956 wide inc mirrors, Kuga 2128.

In fact, Yeti is narrower (albeit only by 8mm!) than the latest gen Polo.

Its a bit of an odd ball, but how about the Suzuki Wagon R?
John :)
This is exactly what I settled on. My neighbour was selling his scruffy 2006 waon R+ with 58K on the clock for £300. It seemed like a great deal to me even though it has a couple of small problems (radio u.s & aircon noisy) but it is ideal for my needs. Thanks Burnerman for your suggestion.
