speed at the poles?

so we're on a great big ball that's spinning..
ignoring the speed which the whole thing is hurtlung through space and concentrating on teh rotational speed only, at the equator you are traveling a lot faster than you are in the UK, and we're traveling faster than someone further north is.. so if you stand exactly on the point where the earth's axis of rotation is, you're not traveling at all..
what happens? how come we don't feel it?
if we could travel fast enough from the pole to the equator, would we feel ourselves accelerating?

you dont feel anything because we arnt moving in relation to our surroundings we are stationary along with our weather within a ball that extends miles out into space
so as far as the world and all its occupants are concerned its the universe that revolves around us

if you stand exactly on the axis then you revolve once a day but don't travel any distance..
if you stand on the equator then you travel 24901.55 miles in 24 hours.. ( so roughly 1037mph... )

so if you walk from the pole to the equator you accelerate from 0 to 1037mph.. :eek: :D
 
Ah, another branch of relativity. ;)

So you're using the analogy of either standing at the centre of a rotating playground roundabout and suddenly jumping from the axis to the circumference.

If you did that though you would slow the earths rotation down a bit, and make the day a bit longer.

This principal is used in quite a few mechanical devices, one that comes to mind is the tilting ball variator, another is the disc and wheel intergrator, both very clever mechanisms, if you are mechanically inclined. :LOL: pun intended

Unless you could pursuade someone to simultaneously walk from the equator to the pole :idea:

Theoretically it will be varying all the time anyway by every single movement made by any object on it's surface anyway. Amongst other parameters that is. I refer you to "the butterfly effect" in chaos theory.
 
Could the earth be slowed down, by deploying massive parachutes on windy days, from the tops of high buildings? ;)
