Unfortunately it's the material fiber/plastic composite mix that seems to give it a binding characteristic, especially with age, just down to the material it seems. The metal filters or the magnet out/flush sludge from the bottom design are much easier to service I find.
Just need to keep that clear of the seals etc, as it's petroleum based it could wreck them longer term methinks.
