He tells the workers he doesn't know when they will be able to come back to work and earn money, so says Tesco are after workers and you can work there for now to earn money.Fair enough, or, you could do nothing and get paid 80%, eventually.Unprecedented times, no one knows what to do.

He is expected to pay his workers as normal. Most decent companies are paying 100% and will collect the 80% back when the government get it sorted. He's already received a vat hold to cover this so should have the money sitting in the bank.

Wetherspoons must have thousands of employees. Do you expect him to give them all full pay whilst he has been forced to stop trading and has no money coming in? And if so, for how long?

Yes; and till it's over to answer your questions. Because it's only 20%, not 'full' pay.

To be fair they might not have that much cash floating about. The government have said they will cover the 80%, just not immediately.

Most businesses that I'm aware of are footing that gap themselves. Weatherspoons arent.

better still get 80% and get a job at tescos

Wait on isnt that fraud?

Staff are being paid not to work, if they then go work during those hours they were supposed to be working at Wetherspoon are they then not being paid double and defeats the point of the Government subsidising their wages.

It'd only be fraud if you lie about it. So it depends on the contracts. In an ideal world the jobs would go to the people on zero hour contracts who won't get the 80% pay, the ones that need the work more.

Then again Covid-19 isn't ideal and it's better to have someone delivering food and potentially getting two pay packets (one distinctly late) than no one at all. So I'd be relaxed about it.

My guess is Tesco's will prioritize people that don't have other commitments when they're hiring people.

Tim Martin is worth £44 million and last year earned £300k Plus

several Spoons have had their windows daubed with graffiti saying "pay your staff"

They made over 100 million (pre-tax) profit last year.
And some of that will go to share holders, of which, a lot are staff. How many other company owners are paying staff out of their own pockets ? I read of some people who are having to pay child care places, even though their kids can't go, probably the same people moaning at Tim not paying his staff.
