Sprinkler systems

Fire can get a grip quite fast and kill quickly. In high-rises it can kill quite a lot very quickly.

The latest statistics for fires in high-rise, reveal that fires and injuries have reached an all time low, and a decreasing number of deaths. That is due to how buildings are built and how they are maintained.

The fact is, compartmentalisation is an effective method of preventing fire spread and of preventing the death or injury of "quite a lot very quickly".

So your ascertion that "Fire can get a grip quite fast and kill quickly" is totally wrong in this context.

Sadly although a good idea it would add far too much cost for social housing and probably private as well.
The architect was named Goldfinger, yes the 007 film was named after him. Trelick Tower is listed and iconic. He built one in the East End and then one in North Kensington, making changes after living in the block in the East End. The accommodation block was easy to build and design as no staircases and lifts were running through. The block has maisonettes, not flats with more of them fitting into the main block. I can't see the block costing that much more, when considering the safety advantages.

Goldfinger put light switches into the door architraves and had split country cottage type of doors onto the balconies, so the mother could watch the children on the balcony when cooking. The boiler was on the top of the service shaft to minimise the size of heating pumps to the flats, reducing electricity to run them, using gravity as the pull. He toyed with the idea of having the service shaft at right angles to the main block.

Well thought out.

What was the reason for the decrease? Consumer Unit with RCDs? More electric sockets around preventing the use of dangerous extensions?

Modern appliances use a lot less energy than older appliances. LED lights use hardly any current to older lights. That means less current through them - safer.

Are some of these bocks now using communal heating meaning only hot water enters the flat and no combustion or electrical elements?

The physical reasons.

The pyhsical implementation of the various requirements of The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

Be aware that fire safety relies on several systems working together, not individually.

I know that. But any prime point, like CUs with RCDs, more sockets?

In fact most things in the public sector would be so much better if ALL politicians just backed off and left it to the people who actually work in them to decide what is best.

The problem, is that a lot of MPs have got there from being local councilers, so did getting into parliment reduce their brain cells, or were they just as inept when working for the council in the first places.

As far as I can see things, none of them know what they are doing.

The evacuated Chalcot towers had 1,000 fire doors missing, exposed gas pipes and blocked staircases and missing internal walls. Oh and flammable cladding. Charming.

That's right. And the external cladding was the lowest or no risk to the residents.

That council had failed in its obligation to implement the legal requirements of the fire safety order, and is using the cladding as an excuse to evacuate the building due to it being a safety risk.

They should be prosecuted, not praised.

A lot of MPs and local councillors put their trust in project managers and accountants and other non elected but salaried civil servants. Unless the MP is an exoerienced and sucessful "professional" in the matter being discussed he or she has to rely on information / opinions from "qualified professionals".

The civil servants, council officers and approved "professionals" are very often the people who are directly responsible for the errors and ommissions that lead to disasters. Often they are mislead by the marketing people in companies looking to get into contracts with local authorities.

Plus, it's always handy to employ an external consultant to write a report with recommendations, then you have someone else to blame if it all goes wrong. If it's a success, of course, you can take all the credit.

A luxury the government does not currently have, since they failed to heed advice and recommendations.
