Starmer abandons plans to cancel local elections.

Have to admit, whether local council and/or UK government, I wouldn't really expect Reform to be dramatically better than any of the established parties. To what extent they might be worse time will tell depending on what local/national power they gain.

I think, in a sense, Reform can already have their excuses/reasoning in place if they do gain power and don't deliver. For example, if they propose radical changes to immigration and can't get the law passed, they can say 'well, we tried, can't blame us' which to varying degrees may indeed be a valid position.

At the end of the day, yes there is financial waste by councils and government, however regardless of who is in power, they ultimately have to try and deliver the same sort of stuff with the same pot of money.

What's the saying? There's only so many ways you can slice a cake.

Note the above is not an anti Reform post. Simply my view that our current political system most likely won't deliver any significant improvements any time soon, regardless of who's in power.
Yep I keep wondering when will labour stop quoting 14 years whenever they fail at something or keep going on about the cost of living crisis like they are still in opposition, when does the continuing cost of living crisis stop being a conservative one and start being a Labour one.

Can't they just blame Brexit, like the rest;)

Could be asserted that's one of the negatives of the current system. No coherent and genuine long term strategy that is seen through to fruition. Every few years we get a new party and new brushes like to sweep clean as they say. Having said that, neither do we want parties in power too long. We've had 19 years of the SNP up here, probably with even more to come :(

Nothing illegal about delaying an election that would have seen councillors voted in for 12 months or so. Kieth has judged it’s better to judge the enemy in full battle.

Any party can have as long as they like within our system.

But every few years we, the people they serve, get to choose whether we let them continue or not.

Keep enough people happy, you can stay in power forever.

Come on Blup, surely you don't believe that. He was heading for another loss in court and he has agreed to pay costs.
Nope, cancelling an election is a political decision as is holding one. Unless he was stupid enough to put in writing that the only reason for cancellation is to weaken Re form. I imagine costs are paid because he pulled out of the case.

So this was a strategy all along? Cancel the elections, knowing that Reform would challenge, then walk away on the court steps, looking weak, making the tax payer pick up the bill. Just to allow reform to show how useless they are?

Might as well call a general election.

or

we are going to lose the court case, it will be hugely embarrassing, and people will vote us out to punish us.

And I thought the cancellations were nothing to do with Reform's huge popularity MNW?

Did I say that. Honestly, can't remember. I remember posting that it was the decision of local councils rather than the government to cancel them.

Council elections

Turn out is generally pretty low imo

I would not bother to walk across the road to vote for some council fruit cake

In fact if I won the national lottery( big)

Find out who and we’re our council leader lived
By the house next door and make his / her life a total misery

Move refugees in rent free there remit would be anti social behaviour
