What I was commenting on, was basically that his disconnection times will be out the window as there is no RCD fitted and that the ideal solution to this would be to replace the CU with a split load 100A 100mA TD + 80A 30mA RCD's (or RCBO's for those with money to burn!!) obviously with a bonding upgrade!!!
I was also pointing out that his current installation will open him up to an increased risk of fire and electric shock (if I see problems like this with an installation I always issue a Danger installation certificate) and I normally get the reply that it's been working fine for the last xx years and when did these 'new' regs come in?

BTW when did RCD's come in for TT installations? and what new problems are we going to encounter when the 17th comes in?

when we went to 17th edition seminar a bloke told us that "u test to whats safe, not to current standards or you will forever be going back"

Did they include a definition of 'safe'? It's years since I worked as a safety engineer, but its something along the lines of the risk of harm being below what is reasonably acceptable. The UK even had an acronym for it - ALARP (as low as reasonably practicable).

The point is that it is IMPOSSIBLE to make any installation 100% safe. You can only reduce the risks to a reasonable level. Meeting best practice/standards such as BS7671 is generally accepted as reasonable provision to provide a safe installation.
