Until two or three years ago, we used to process them and grant asylum to most. They could then work legally and stop being a burden on the state. The current system, where they are held indefinitely in hotels, was supposed to be a deterrent. But now people are claiming that it is actually an incentive to come here. It is all very confusing!

I don't think anyone has said that a 4 star hotel and all your food provided and a bit of pocket money on top was ever a deterrent

When they know what awaits them then there will be no boats. Don't worry about jailing genuine asylum seekers as they will be processed very quickly as they will have proof of ID that won't be at the bottom of the English channel.

Deterrents only work if people think there is a high chance of it applying to them. What sort of detention facilities are you thinking of and how many places might we need to make a deterrent effective.

Best deterrent is to refuse most applications on the spot. It would be very simple, no passport or papers then automatic refusal. Genuine ones housed in detention centres and verified within 5 days. Ask how they can support themselves instead of givng money to traffickers. A minimum of 5k in the bank to support themselves for a 4 month period as no handouts to be given for the first 4 months. Not such an attractive offer to come here thereafter.

Virtually every post I’ve ever made about an asylum seeker or an illegal immigrant over here committing a crime is countered by you giving examples of indigenous criminals. The only reason you could possibly have to do that is because you think it will lessen the severity of 'foreigner' crime. We know we have indigenous criminals but unfortunately they have a right to be here unlike the scum of the earth that come here, ask for asylum then rob, rape and murder. Grow up.
