If a lot of people and the media call him a thug and he has a football hooligan past when he was younger, why would anyone in their right mind go and try him on? I'm not surprised he defended himself and managed to put the guy on the floor with a single punch.

Given the fact that he has been released and not send down immediatly I can assume that the police did not have any evidence to hold him that showed the opposite of what he was saying.
Flee the scene? He had somewhere to go and given how he gets treated by the police I'd be wanting to leave immediatly, also as has been said - people do leave the scene for other reasons.
So yes I'd believe him, certainly over you - any day, any week.
