Apple ordered by UK government to let it access users' encrypted data - reports

The government will not confirm or deny the existence of the order. There are concerns that breaking encryption could allow bad actors to access people's data, and pave the way for countries like China to make similar demands.

If this comes to pass, I think it's one of those whereby if they want to access an individuals data, they need to apply to the court i.e. not just proceed without any checks and balances.

But Apple says that privacy for its customers is at the heart of all its products and services.

But do you think terrorists should be able to discuss plans without any state spying or intelligence gathering?

It's about the checks and balances involved, not the whether it can be done or not.

I like to sleep safe at night because the state is doing its best to keep us safe.

I honestly don't know.

And the reports say that once the ability to decrypt is enabled, bad actors will eventually find a way in.

This is definitely an issue where I am in two minds.

And the issue with this apple system is that it's more secure.

It makes some sense that access should be available under correct circumstances.

We should be discussing what the circumstances are, not whether it should be allowed or not
