Or would you rather look at how chaos theory was preceeded by catastrophe theory and it mathematical, engineering and sociological applications towards a non-deterministic description of events?

Ok, had a look, no I don't understand it. but that's missing the point entirely, wouldn't that be a good question to ask on a university challenge question? I'm sure you can enlighten us? on the gram-schmidt orthonormalization that is.

Are you sure it was University Challenge you had on Eddie? It wasn't presented by Noel Edmonds by any chance was it?

I could get a little Softus on you, cos I've not had a great day, so shall we call it quits with a gentle FO! in the politest possible manner

This is a method on how to rearrange a matrix using standard row and column procedures so that it becomes unitary in content, close to the identity matrix.

As to whether I'm missing the point, am I? Although I didn't see it, surely one of the objectives it to ask questions which both the contestants and the wider viewing audience have a chance of answering. How many on the panel were scientists, and what proportion of the audience are sad old maths graduates like myself? Enough to warrant an equally weighted number of questions? I don't know.

Anyway, it's all part of the learning process. Which model do you prefer - the goal-directed (advocated by Skemp et al) or the traditional stimulus-response cognitive model?

  I hadn't realised I'd got you Hard!!!

Hey I can still smile, we could alway talk about the nascent effect of the SP2 hybridisation of the oxygen atom when in conjunction of 2 hydrogen atoms, and it's palpable effect on life as we know it, but that would be a bit sad.

Far from it - let's
Maybe over dinner sometime. Candle-lit meal at McDonalds

I don't know, what proportion are sad old chemistry / physics / engineering graduates? you're the Maths grad, do the stats.
