I am a member of USDAW, the union for shop, distribution and allied workers (apparently).

Anyway, I just recieved a 16 page propoganda leaflet from them all about why I should vote labour. I'm sending a letter tomorrow to cancel my membership. I dont pay £10 a month to be told who to vote for. They (USDAW) dont do anything for me anyway.

But what I did realise reading the leaflet is that everything labour has done for "working people" has added to the deficit. Increasing pensions, JSA, maternity/paternity allowances, holidays, tax credits, free tv licenses, 15%vat. All this looks good in the leaflet, but then I thought about the other side. ALL of this has meant taxes have gone up every year since labour got into power. However, nowhere in the leaflet does it mention this. Talk about a balanced view.

The thing is, maternity, JSA, pensions, tax credits etc dont affect me, and wont for a long time, but TAX does affect me big time, being a higher-than-average-earning USDAW member. So no, USDAW, I know you support labour financially, but I wont be voting for them.

With respect Steve, a union supporting labour is hardly a surprise.

Trade unions cut absolutely no mustard with tories, whereas they still have a bit of power to their elbow within labour. Thus they support labour in the interest of self-preservation and not the good of the country as a whole.

Understandable i know. But the propaganda was out of the blue. Didnt realise they felt so strongly. However, nothing in the leaflet appeals to me - im not their target market. Thus im leaving the union - all their advice etc is online for free

'New' Labour have done nothing positive for working people. Filling the country with immigrants doesn't affect the middle, political and upper classes really.

However, those lower down the food chain have seen their communities obliterated, and now have little chance of themselves or their offspring getting social housing. They also have to compete for jobs, schooling and healthcare with the new arrivals.

Working classes voting labour is like turkeys voting for Christmas (or because we are so infested with people of differing faiths, is this now 'Winterval'?)

but their support (if there is any at the moment) will cease with your cancelled sub, why not sign the form to exclude your portion of union dues going to the labour party and sent to charity instead

The Unions own labour now. In a few weeks time civil war will erupt in labour as they try and eject New Labour and return the party back to 70's socialism.

Winter of Discontent, anyone ?

Sounds good to me.

We effectively have a one-party system, with "Conservatives Lite" (aka the Tory party) and "I can't believe they're not Conservatives!" (aka New Labour).

Simply put, the system used to be balanced between the Tories and Labour, opposing policies in various things such as tax, public services and the support (or not) of our industries.

Unfortunately, New Labour took the worst parts of Labour and the worst parts of Conservatism and created a bag of sh*te that taxed people like mad, without giving anything back for it.

So, Labour's return to old ways would be welcomed by me as the pain would be no worse than this last Labour term, but at least we'd have some decent hospitals and schools to show for it.

Of course, I want Labour to lose next month.

Doesn't really matter who gets in.. First thing MP's will be voting on will be a nice fat rise for themselves. Quickly followed by a vote on their pension entitlement (taking into consideration loss of expenses claims). So to cut it short, they will make damn sure, they are alright, whilst the rest of us have to suffer.
