Welcome to my kitchen  :)

As you can see it's Victorian and quite tall (10ft). You will notice that the light at the end of the kitchen blown. The light uses a G9 bulb which are very expensive and blow all the time. (The last one was changed 10 days ago. So much for 2000 hours).

Anyway the reason I believe this is happening is because being a kitchen it is steamy, I also use a baby steriliser machine and the steam naturally drifts upwards.

My question is changing the lights to GU10 be better in the long run. Do they resist steam better than G9, or are there any single halogen lights that would tolerate steam better. I am thinking is there a bathroom zone 2 light suitable that's not pig ugly.

A GU10 will not give a very good spread of light. (Then again I cant imagine those 2 lamps being terribly bright on their own as they are)

Are you using cheap bulbs? This is often the problem.

OK then this begs the question. What are a good make? :D

It also still asks change them to GU10 or not!!

Back to lighting intensity. The photo doesn't show two others at this end of kitchen. There are also downlighters on all work tops so light levels are pretty good.

To prove how anal I am I calculated what the lx was when I did it as part of 2330!
(That last line would make a good signature)

cheap bulbs are all very well if your voltage is near the 200 volt mark. Yours is likely to be around 245 if they blow often.

Oh, and the worktop lighting would be even better if you used fluorescent tubes.

I would check that there is ventilation provided on the fittings. Are the fittings suitable for that orientation? What is the recommended lamp size for the fitting? Is there excessive vibration from above?

So many questions so little time!

Secure has put his [OSRAM] hat on, hip hip hip hooray,

Secure has put his [OSRAM]hat on and he's not coming out to play...

Amazing what a tot of single malt whiskey does to you....

A GOOD MAKE FOR G9 BULBS

Isn't that an oxymoron?

I am now of the conclusion that G9 bulbs are s**t!. I was using Osram. There is no vibration. The voltage at lamp is not over 230v. etc etc

I am going to change them to GU10 single illiminaires.

With the cost of bulbs blowing running into the GDP of a small country I will be paid back within the year I hope.

Thanks for confirming my fears about G9.

:(

are you using gloves or those little sucker things to fit the bulbs?

fingerprints mess up the lifespan of some bulbs..

I have G9 uplighters in my living room and have no problem with bulb lifetime (OSRAM). I do have a soft-on/off dimmer controlling them though.
