Came accross this stuff today.

CSA at a guess was 1.5mm² - 2.5mm². The conductors were fine stranded like trirated cable.

Not sure if the conductors and braiding were tinned copper. It looked more like steel to me.

The outside insulation was PVC.

What would this normally be used for? I found a garage wired entirely in this stuff.

No not seen that before, although it reminds me of this:

The braid is the cpc in this case?

Edit: Shucks!

Yeah but with SY you get copper conductors and also standard core colours.

Yeah the braid was being used as the earth, and the cable was supplying both lights and sockets.
It looked like a proper DIY bodge it job.

Its not one that I've seen before

Thought maybe some of the old boys on here might know

Screened multi-core cable - seen it used in many defence applications.

Usually used with the old Plessey Plugs for control circuits where screen reduces EM pick up

I didn't even bother doing taking a loop TBH. Just cut the whole lot off.

I would agree with DESL - I used to work for B Aerospace and we used to use many types of similar cables, they are for specialised applications but mostly for military purposes.
I could elaborate but then I would have to exterminate you. Official secrets act an all that

Perhaps the guy got a load from a similar type company and decided to make use of it.

Yeah, it looks like bog standard screened control cable. We have a lot of it at work, the conductors will be more than likely tinned copper.

My neighbour works for the council and I'm sure I've seen that cable on his van, they use it for street lighting :? could be wrong though
