What have you been doing today?

Relatively overcast and cool here in Essex.

It's been cloudless all day, but it seems to have peaked at 28C. Forecast was 32C. There is a gentle breeze and in the shade it is extremely pleasant. I could get used to this. Global warming isn't all bad @aveatry !!

I've just been out with two more gauges, which I've been fitting into a panel for my boiler flow and return temperatures. My weather station, in an homemade Stevenson screen says 32.8C, and the two gauges with their sensors also outside in the shade of my workshop, agree on 32.7C.

I had always assumed my Stevenson screen on the weather station, 'needed more work' - would still read a bit high in full sun and no breeze. The sensor has a built-in screen, which I wasn't convinced was adequate in full sun, so then over the top I adapted a series of upside down plastic plant pot dishes, painted silver.

On this side of Yorkshire, the Met office seem to have very few weather stations. There is only really the one at Wilsden, AFAIK. Your readings are a couple of degrees higher than that one. Mine are a couple of degrees lower than Wilsden , but it isn't a proper set up like yours. I am surprised they don't have better coverage.

it is always worth comparing our own readings with official figures, yesterday i made 29.1, and Charterhall nearby (met office station) made 29.4

Today we peeked at 31.1 which it will make it our third warmest week in the last 20 years, and warmest ever in August

I have always loved extreme weather so it has some plus points for me

Last week we had our highest gust of wind for July and August 48.2mph
even my humble weather records over the past 20 years shows change

we live in exciting times

We peaked at 29.2 and it felt very nice. I think humidity was low, though.

Something I don't understand is this observations map. How do they get the temperatures for the areas where there are no stations to obtain the colours. For instance, those three dark red patches near the bottom, just above Watnall. How do they know it was that temperature there.

Aside from the official stations, there are thousands of amateur stations like mine, feeding in data, perhaps they interpolate that?

That is the one thing I cannot measure with any accuracy, my anemometer is surround on three sides by trees.
I can' measure that with any accuracy either, its a home made thing from a bicycle computer and one of those spinning air vents you used to get on vans - LOL
I doubt the met office would accept its results, but i believe it is very comparable with it self, (and I don't thing they are that far out)
it has measured 320,000 miles of air passing since July 2011 (440 mile per week)

still 28 at nearly 7pm - seriously weird day for us
about to head off on the bike for a few miles - if I'm not back later I will probably of had a heart attack - lol

Rescuing another bird! Mrs Mottie noticed that there was a lethargic sparrow inside our bird feeder. It’s one of those that have a tube of seed inside a domed cage to prevent squirrels or big birds getting at the seed. Anyway, I went over to it and it tried to fly out but I managed to catch it. On inspection, it had what looked like two lumps of loose flesh on it - one under each eye. I looked closer and they were ticks! We had a tick remover in our dog walking bag so I used that to remove the buggers. I checked it over and found no more so I released it. Good deed for the day done. Tick!

looks like one of those super flex things with like a twin header, best part of million pounds worth of combine there

I've just been out with two more gauges, which I've been fitting into a panel for my boiler flow and return temperatures.

The two digital temperature gauges, each ran on a pair of button cells, in parallel, so four in total for the two gauges. With the gauges on all the time, I was finding the button cells were not lasting more than a few months, and quite fiddly to change - the display contrast just gradually declines to none. Today, I cut a little plastic, to accept the two panel mount gauges, plus a AAA single cell holder, and soldered/wired in place of the button cells.
