what transformer to use?

Make the switch turn the socket on and off, and mount the socket somewhere discreet

"we" have given several viable options

i am begining to think "what part of no, do you not understand"

ok, thanks, I will try this.

It's not the solution I was after, but I'm thinking it can work.

Breezer, no need to get shirty mate, sorry I didnt fully understand what you were saying straightaway.

i wasn't getting shirty, i just typed what everyone else was thinking

I could be really nice and say try
it says its 12v ac,

it didnt look right above your post, so i will put it here.

i actualy found just what you wanted, honest, a 12v ac out put non electronic transformer, but after your above comment , i edited it to remove it

I would expect nothing less.

To anyone that is offended by my problem, my next question is this:

If I am to plug the lights into a socket, can I use a spur off the mains to a switched socket (hidden discretely) which is in turn controlled by a switch on the wall? Does this have to be a fused switch?

I am being extra nice

why not use a switched fuse connection unit?

you cant use a light switch to switch a socket unless it is protected by a lower rated fuse (3 or 5a) which needs to be fitted in a fused connection unit, hence the idea of a switched fuse connection unit (lessboxes and less connections)

Why not just put a socket on the end of the cable you currently have feeding that transformer? Put this in a large gewiss box - the DIY stores now sell these for guys at xmas.

It is not ideal having a socket on lighting circuit, but if it is enclosed in a gewiss box, it makes it far more acceptable to me.
