As the title.

They are a nuisance. I hate them.

Please tell me why they still exist and why one might use them over a cross-head.

Use a proper size screwdriver.
i have had more trouble getting tight posi and philips out than have every had with slots

If you compare the top of the screws you will see that pozi does not have a sharp edge on the countersunk part, this leaves a small gap between the screw and the countersink. Not important in modern construction where all screws are welted in with a power screwdriver, but in quality work it does matter. As gas112 says, use the correct size screwdriver.

Slotted screws are far easier to remove paint from so that you can get them undone. A damaged slot can be re-cut in situ for dome headed screws and most important of all, slotted screws look a damn sight better than pozi's where they are exposed. It boils my **** to see a nice gate with its furniture fixed with countersunk pozi's when they should be dome headed slots. /rant

Slotties are shaped and work like a dowel. I find myself going back to them. You can get a gadget that drills and countersinks all in one for your battery drill.

Philips and Pozidriv stem from the requirement for mechanical assembly, I believe......much harder to control a slotted screw with a revolving bit.

The best thing about slotted screws is that you can file down the bit of the slots that the screwdriver acts upon when unscrewing.
Do that with some doorhinge screws and just imagine the fun the next poor c**ts going to have trying to get that door off.

Slots are cheap and easy to make, easy to clear, work in brass, look nicer to some.

Phillips are designed for automated assylines and to cam out at a set torque before torque limiting devices where cheap/avilable/reliable.

Posidrive remove the cam-out feasure to provide a more positive drive, which retaining the self-centering ability.

Torx are what you want to be using if you have got big screws and really need to get some twist into the head!

Because slotted headed screws are far more superior. Phillips drive are next to usless, posi-drive only slightly better.

If you need a big screw and it's going to take some thrutching to get it done up then a slotted is the way to go, Pozi ones just do not have the same level of umpfacceptance.

I keep an old brace & bit just for them, allows me to put big screws into my ancient stone walls high up with plenty of tightness about them.

Pozi is for farty little screws that go into soft muck. Pffft!

I had to lift some boards that were fix with Pozies full of paint, I tried heating up pozi bits Which got a few out I ended up with 75% firewood guess who put the the bloody things in ,All through that job I had some old chippies words echoing in my head "You'll never get them bloody screws out when theyre full of paint".
