The instructions with my water softener indicated that it should be plugged into an unswitched electrical socket (it has a mains lead with plug already attached). Can anyone tell me why it has to be unswitched please? I have a perfectly good switched socket nearby and don't really want to change it.

So it can't get accidently switched off.

Wouldn't take too much notice, plug it in the switched socket.

I take it it's not in a bathroom?

some switched sockets are switched on the live only. Therefore switching off would not isolate both live and neutral.

Using an unswitched socket forces removal of the plug to isolate, which will isolate both L and N.

A water softener is designed to run constantly so the only reason to isolate would be for maintenance. Nobody should rely on a single or double pole switch of a socket outlet, always remove the plug. Due to that, I favour the reasoning given by sparkwright.

nobody should rely on a socket switch, but some do.

The same stipulation is made for many central heating boilers.
