Though doesn't sound unreasonable to me, standard advice is to get three quotes and take the middle one, seeking recommendations from family/freinds/relatives is also a good idea to make sure you end up with a decent tradesperson

You should always get more than one quote. Make sure that whoever you get can either self-certify compliance with the Building Regulations or will be taking the proper LABC notification route. Do not be fobbed off with Electrical Installation Certificates, and "all work done according to the Wiring Regulations" - it's not enough.

You should discuss the issue of testing and fault finding with the electrician(s) - you don't want to be left in the lurch or held to ransom if you start getting trips from your shiny new RCD, as that price will not include any remedial work that turns out to be required.

You should have a bigger CU put in to allow for future expansion.

Price depends on so many variables, and I'm no expert on pricing, but my gut feel is that £300 is at the low end of what you should be expecting to pay for a good job and a good quality CU.

See these for a couple of recent examples of why cheapest is not always best:

In my opinion the price is about right- assuming it's a good split load consumer unit.

Get a few quotes, but get them to quote like for like, ask what make and type they are fitting, and is certifiaction inculded.

Use the foce ( in other words if the company feels iffy or strange leave it)
