Hi there,
I tried searching but couldn't find what I was looking for.

I am looking to decorate our bathroom.
Theres something thats confusing to me.
1. I want to install a shaver point. I want to install it into some MDF (the MDF fills a window hole where an extension has been put on) Can i cut out the MDF and mount it directly on to here (or do i need a back box)
I see i need a shaver socket with transformer but i cant to seem to see one to buy. I seem to read conflicting information.
Can anyone clear this up for me

Thanks,
Pat

You need a back box. What's behind the MDF - any battens to which you could screw a metal one?

A plasterboard box might work - dunno - maybe someone here has done that and can say.

Whose idea was the MDF anyway? Not good stuff for bathrooms.

Yes you do - where have you looked? The transformer ones are more common than the ones without...

Also, do you realise that this work is notifiable? Before you start you are legally required to submit an application to your council's Building Control dept.

Wow, thanks for a quick reply.
The MDF was already in when we moved here. Its survived well enough for the last few years, but i see what you mean.

In looking again I think I misjudged the gap behind which would mean my only option is putting in a surface pattress. I think for pure complexity and therefore budget i may have to give this a miss.

Do you know of any resource where i can find out what requires me to inform the council and what doesnt?

Thanks for your help!
Pat

Err - you don't - I could have sworn I checked your location, but obviously not. Part P (http://www.diynot.com/wiki/electrics:part-p) doesn't apply in Scotland.

Sorry.

oops i do live in England.
I just set a random location, i never imagined it had any significance!
Sorry!

So did you change it after your original post from something to Dunbarton?

Be nice to know I'm not going mad... :?

Anyway - click the link, and read all about Part P, and what it means to DIYers.

haha yes i did!
Was having a play with My Profile!

Thanks for your help, will have a good read :)

Dry lining box would work if you had enough space behind, for a shaver point you'll need a 47mm one, on some makes you might have to shave a ridge off on the inside to allow the tabs to close back when its mounted in something thicker than plasterboard
