i have been advised to have a magnaclean installed on c/h system,is this going to work without the system being flushed,and can anyone let me know how much i should be paying??if i'm repeating this i apologise.many thanks for your help

A magnaclean will work without a system flush, but it is best to do both. Arguable what you should do first, I don't think it matters a lot.
Hard to say what a reasonable price is, as you need to drain the system, and cut into the pipes.
Draining and refilling the system could take anywhere between half an hour and half a day, depending on how well the system is designed and built, and whether it is open vent or sealed.
The best place for the filter is on the return pipe between the boiler and the first tee. If there is easy access and room to work, could be as little as half an hour, but it could well be longer if the boiler is hidden and little room to work.

i would deffinetly get one installed.even local council are installng em round here.i couldnt big em up enough.when we do an install we give the option of a magnaclean for £120 but on that we guarantee our pipe work for 5 years.
I put one on my old mum's system, which is 30 years old, and captured a lot of black sludge (I did give it a chemical clean as well). the device cost me about £100 and I suppose I spent half a day draining down, fitting and refilling, and bleeding radiators. It is within the ability of an average DIY plumber. It would have been a lot quicker if I hadn't drained and flushed it but I am sure this enabled me to do a better job as I combined it with a clean.

yes depending on what system you have.even sealed systems can be a pain.as for magnaclean id go as far as saying, i'd swap one for my wife. shes not as dirty.just joking im not married.
I would always say that a magnetic filter is not necessary IF the system has been properly power flushed.
Of course many of the flushing jobs and not done properly. Its hard work anmd takes about 4-5 hours in most cases and consumes about £35 of chemicals.
I see a lot of semi cowboys poutting a filter on instead for proper flushing but they make no provision for cleaning them. And they dont put the gauze filter in the outlet either.

I used to say the same, until I installed one after:
Chemical flush
Mains flush a la ChrisR
Powerflush
Mains flush a la ChrisR to make sure that all the loose dirt and chemicals were removed
There will always be tiny amounts of dirt left in the system. I don't think they would do a lot of harm, but better out than in, and I think it is well worth the bit of extra on a boiler change.
well thanks chaps for the reply,british gas have suggested i do this without a flush,if i have a flush and a magnaclean it's gonna cost me in the region of £700!!!now what they have said is that now they have recommened it (a magnaclean)my homecare policy won't be valid on water based problems.any thoughts or do you think they are just having a laugh
Fitted my first Magnaclean on my own system last year, Before old boiler was removed, chemical clean and power flush, New Remeha 35c fitted with magnaclean, filled with clean water and ran system for 10mins, drained down ready to refill with inhibitor, before refilling, checked Magnaclean, I WAS AMAZED BY THE AMOUNT OF CRAP THAT WAS CLINGING TO THE MAGNET!, Checked again after 3 months, foud to be pretty clean, Conclusion: we now specify and fit a Magnaclean on ALL COMBI installs and strongly recommend on all others

You take out insurance.
You pay your money.
But unless you pay me an extra 700 quid, I won't repair any problems ( no doubt that any problem that comes up will be blamed on your lack of magnaclean and flush.

Are you willing to try a DIY chemical clean yourself? Does your system have a small water tank in the loft (a feed and expansion) or is it a sealed system with a pressure guage on the boiler?
IMO as a householder, a Magnaclean and some X400 is very easy, fairly cheap, and will do a lot of good. Having a powerflush as well would be even better, but it will probably mean you don't need a powerflush as it will take out a lot of the black sludge.

I reckon you can find a decent local RGI that will do a service and fit a magnaclean for around £200 and if it is in conjunction with the job, do a chemical flush for another £100.

Direct debit the money into a savings account, and have an annual service in stead. With a bit of luck, your savings will cover the best part of the price of a quality new boiler by the time you need one.
