The latest idea of how to get money from motorists is the land owners of retail parks now have system of how to get money from the motorist. If any vehicle is over the white lines or the vehicle is sticking out of the bay you will receive a charge of £60 apparently when you do park over the white lines or a vehicle is (obstructing ) other traffic they contact the dvla and yes they have a permit to do this for a nominal fee and then they send you a charge through the post of £60 reduced to £30 if paid immideiately and rises to £90 if you miss the date. Just be very careful when you visits B-Q or wickes as your van may be classed as obstructing other users due to the size of it..also you can be fined if you stay over 3 hours but cant see how thats monitored and DONT park in disabled bays as you the deserve the fine

As much as this is just another stealth way of screwing the motorist, I kinda think it will have some benefits to it.
It p*sses me off when some idiot in a 4x4 or people carrier parks in a bay at an angle which makes the car parking space next to it redundant as you can't fit your car into it!
If people can't park a car between the white lines of a parking bay you have to question how they ever got a driving license.

Agree with you with the idiots who take up 2 spaces but in the retail park by me a guy was parked in a bay where the was a tree in a squared section the reduces 4 bays it is in contact with now this guy had a passat estate and the tail end was sticking out due to this but it could be any large car and the you are obstructing the traffic...If you have a large van your probably stuffed as they wont fit into the bays
OK, I dont know where you got the info from JOHNBOY42, but I find it hard to believe that this will ever be policed properly if it is actually done. Unless the place has an actual car park attendant. Which is hardly ever. Because they have better things to spend £6 an hour on! Personell budgets are tighter than ever. Nobody has a car park attendant nowadays.
And I park across 2 bays. You know why? Because I'm sick to the back teeth of finding dents and scrapes in the side of my car. If they want me to stop doing this, they can make the bays wider. The car park at Wickes doncaster is always deserted anyway, cos nobody goes there, its ****. But the B&Q car park is always full, and thats 2 miles further from the town centre. And its parking spaces are about an inch wider than my car! (citroen c4) This is clearly a case where B&Q's contractors laid the tarmac and said "we want 400 spaces painting, dont care how narrow they are, we need 400".
And if they send me a fine, on what grounds is this? There are no signs up saying not to park across 2 bays, and its private land. A dent in my car would cost more to repair than the fine. I'd send it back unpaid with a letter explaining my actions.
The only "viable" and "sure fire" car park management scheme is the one Tesco in Doncaster uses - ANPR cameras on entrance and exit that time the distance between the two events and work out your charge. In this case the first 2 hours are free, over that its £70. Automatic software manages this, not staff. Though it wont stop me parking across 2 bays.

Sizes of spaces are laid down by the local Planning Department and the Client. Its nothing whatsoever to do with the contractor who paints the lines.
You need to take a driving test again or get an eye test if you have problems parking your C4.
The point is, B&Q will have had the tarmac laid on the land without thought to how many spaces they need - perhaps they didnt know at that point, then approached a line painter and said "we need 400 spaces on this land".
Poor line painter has to squeeze the lines as close as he can to fit this many lines in, or B&Q might not pay him! And poor motorist has to squeeze his car into such tiny spaces!

The number of spaces is determined at planning level not after the tarmac has been laid at the end of the job!

Ill repeat what was said above, its all completely irrelevant.
Parking on private land is NOT covered by the Road Traffic Act, and any ticket and clamping you get is completely unenforceable, and has no basis in law. You cannot be taken to court, you cannot have the bailiffs on you, its all ******.

There are no hard and fast rules on the sizes of parking spaces, every Local Authority has different rules in reality. That said most insist on a minimum of 2.4m X 4.8m, have done for years, trouble is cars are getting bigger. Get your tape measure out next time you go. If they are smaller its because the LA allowed them be. Retailers are faced with a dilemma of achieving maximum use of land and not upsetting too many people.

Without wanting to upset any particular group of people on here,, What I find exasperating at our local B&Q is the fact that they have 60+ parking spaces right in front of the store for disabled parking. Anytime I go there, probably less than half of these are in use. There are signs up informing motorists that the disabled parking spaces are not to be used by anyone without a Blue Badge in their vehicle. Anyone parking there without a blue badge is liable to incur a fine.
Same at Asda's. And don't even start me on these Mother and Child parking bays. Only a few weeks ago, we had one of our grandchildren with us . Pulled into a bay at Asda and there's some woman tooting her horn at me. I walked over to ask what her problem was and she told me these bays are specifically for people with young children.(she had a child of about nine yrs old in her car). I just walked back to the car and let my grandchild out of the back of the vehicle and smiled politely at her. She gave me the look of death. The Female Dog her.

The mother and child bays should be at the very back of the car park. This is because by the time the child gets to the store, it will be tired and wont run around the place knocking stuff over. Also the mothers will be grumpy about the fact, and more likely to "properly" discipline their kids.

No, B&Q is a private company and does not have the ability to 'fine' you, only the courts can do that. All they CAN do is issue you with an invoice made to look like a parking ticket, which they could try and enforce, but if they actually tried to take you to court you could easily demolish there claim.
This is a private company on private land, they have no more ability to issue fines than you or me.
Again, down to highways and the Planning Department not the retailer. Arguably though, does it really matter that you have to spend an extra 30 seconds walking to your car. Its not like these spaces would ever be any emptier than any other part of the car park anyway as every man and his dog would be fighting to get in there just to save 30 seconds!
When you have kids or unfortunately require a disabled badge (I too get annoyed seeing seemingly able bodied individuals (deaf in one ear of similar!) get out of their brand new motors in the disabled bays) these seemingly bad things suddenly seem like a good thing.
