If I gland two lengths of SWA into a conduit box and tee off in 2 core flex/Hi-Tuf to a class II light fitting, would the conduit box provide a suitable earth continuity for the armour if I had a class I fitting farther down the line?
Not really a functional earth as opposed to protective earthing.
It is usually possible to use the SWA steel armour as a protective earth, either by tabulated values or by use of the adiabatic equation. As you can see here: http://www.diynot.com/wiki/electrics:swa-earthing the SWA in 2c 1.5mm SWA is suitable for use as a circuit protective conductor using the tabulated value.
