Hi all,

Wondering if any of you can give me some ideas for lighting in a kitchen diner? 9 metres of worktop and about 15 sq metres of floor space.

Was originally going to put in downlights, but you lot have put me off them   , also I want to sound proof the ceiling when it gets re plaster boarded, as alot of noise travels from upstairs in our house, so downlights would be a worry.

Any ideas gratefully received, links and pics also good :D

who put you off down lights??

best thing for a kitchen in my opinion..

stick to low voltage though

I really am worried about heat and insulation though with downlights :?:

if you bought a fire rated down light ( i use some made by click) they will be sealed so you you wont loose to much insulation,, wise not to cover them tho

Simply not true.

Fire rated lights are designed to prevent fire spreading from the room below through the holes in the ceiling.
In most domestic situations, this is not required.

Fire rated or not, they still require clear space around and above to avoid overheating and causing a fire.

err what have i said that is not true??

i was trying to point out that a fire rated fitting has a back so the heat from the from the room would not escape from the room below as it would with a standard down light with no back...

also when did i say you could cover them... dick

Fire rated downlights do not contain any insulation, have no insulating properties, insulation cannot be placed over them, and they require clear space around them - exactly the same as any other downlight.
They are not sealed either - they have holes in the metal can to allow heat to escape.

**REMOVED** click ones are sealed, so you wont get a draft through them... they use the alluminimum reflective lamps..

the click ones are also approved for instances where the ceiling is sound proofed..

i also said wise not to cover them....[

get your facts right before you start to criticise... so say sorry

That's funny because I've just been on Scolmore Click's website and in the data PDF for their downlighters it clearly says they have ventilation holes in the top of their flameguard downlighters.

If you don't beleive me have a look on page 6 here:

I've even got a copy of the picture, and highlighted the bit about ventilation holes in red for you. :D
