Does Anyone Ever Get Any Work From People Posting On Diynot?

The thought occurred to me the other day. I have about 2000 posts under my belt mainly plumbing related, and like to think that some of the drivel that I have typed has helped a few people along the way. However, some have thousands more posts than me.

I have never been asked by someone local who I have helped, to do work for them. Has any of the trades on here picked up work as a direct result of advice given on Diynot? What sort of jobs, and any really good ones? Does anyone have regulars gained through this site?

Yes, got various clients through giving advice on DIY-not. From small DIY-materials orders (all over the UK and beyond) to larger supply and install jobs (local). Also been abel to pass on works further afield to related businesses

As for regulars, always keep in contact with existing clients - no matter where you got them from, that's the best marketing lesson I've learned

Funny you ask that, I am looking at moving in the nxt 12mths.
Currently all the trades that I use I know personally from my golf club.
When I move I had intended making a post on here for trades people & then checking them out via their posts.
That is unless I join another golf club, I personally think referals are the best way, its also good if you can view previous work.

I'm a new boy compared with you seasoned diynotters. Never got any work for it, and don't really expect it. For me it's another link back to my website to push me up the ladder - and it has.

In addition a great site for venting your thoughts, views and picking up tips, as well as helping clueless people.

Maybe it would be an idea to have your name followd by your trade, although I can just imagine some of the people on here calling themselves 'brain surgeon', etc.

The Plumbing and Heating Forum is pretty much a price comparison site. I can't see any regualrs on there (myself included) getting work, as we will be shafted by the CC or CCC's. I am not here to advertise or try to gain work though (we have a firm based in North West London that does that every chance it gets).

I like giving advise for free, but I really cannot be ar55ed to verify if a price is too high. (Never too low is it?)

In 6yrs or so, I've had about 5 or 6 jobs. All but 1 were awkward repair jobs, not surprising considering why people come on the forum in the first place ! Only 1 recent job, where a poster came asking for advise, was a good job local to me, although I'd already done a similar job for someone else in his street.

Its not surprising that people come to a DIY site looking for ways to do the work themselves. That does not include employing someone.

I am contactable from the profile but only do about 2-3 jobs a year for people who have contacted me through this site. Most are problem jobs which others cannot or will not do particularly on outdated boilers.

Some of my regular customers comment that they have seen my postings on the internet though.

Even if I covered the whole of London, thats only about 15% of the population so statistically more than 85% are well outside my area.

What I do get though are many who think its par for their course to telephone me for free personal boiler repair advice, particularly registered installers about very simple faults when they should know better.

One homeowner phoned at 1600 hrs on a Sunday afternoon from London and told me "that I gave free diagnostic advice" ! I told him that I would be happy to come and repair his boiler and could be there within an hour but I did not give free DIY advice, particularly at the weekend. He did not take up my offer!
