New Boiler needed for the sake of 2 rubber seals?!

substituting gas critical seals without manufacturer approval is nuts, if something dries and shrinks due to being an incorrect size / material and then leaks thats RIDDOR reportable.

C'mon, it's only a low gas pressure seal, don't be a jobsworth for christ sake. There plenty of gas pipe fittings only held together with flux or threads with a smear of Bosswhite.

For you BG guys, it just a 'cover your a.se' culture, we work in the real world where the customers keeps a roof over our heads.

I just keep to the regs, they may be stupid or wrong but they can't be over-ruled just because you're in 'the real world', I'm sure that's the same line all the unregistered use.

Not the case mate, we can't bolt & leave it to the next BG employee that comes along, with his probe ready to stick it up some auld dear's flue. No, we need to fix things & not use some petty excuse to the customer & offer a £5K boiler change!!!..............

It'll all 'come out in the wash' on Watchdog tonight!!!.......

Is the gas valve perhaps used on another boiler - Yes

Are the O-Rings listed in the parts for that boiler - Yes

Took me about 2 minutes to track them down. A further 2 minutes and I could confirm they were OK with the Manufacturer.

Job done and done safely.

Hang on I'm not talking about fitting correct parts I'm talking about sustituting your own which is in direct contravention of the regs, like it or not.

But they're clearly lead by the nose & their laptops.
'Puter says no!!!

Did the BG slaphead lie to the Ginger Minger in Watchdog?? Do BG employees not get a bonus for a boiler replacement referral??

Yes they do get a small one for a referral, however the daft old moo kept asking if they got commission on a sale....they don't.

For me to get someone to replace their boiler nets me a tenner, as you said on a previous post you sell a service to keep a roof over your head. Realistically who's incentive is greater?

To be fair there are plenty of BG lads not clever enough to cross reference the part number with another boiler or part number.

Wish we did, I would actually make some money that way.

That being the case its not beyond the capability within BG to note against an unlisted part that the same part is available on another make/model.

Or perhaps the BG management dont actually want older boilers fixed? Its certainly more profitable having the chance to replace a boiler!

I was delayed and missed the beginning of the program tonight. Is it really performed live ?

Who is the bold BG man who gave his email address?

Where can I see it again?

Did anyone record it to post on Youtube ?

Strange one this

Lots of guys saying just get a generic seal and fit it ... its only a seal, low pressure, test it and all will be ok

If not using the correct seal then your going against the Manufactures instructions

Last guy that did that got 3 years I seem to remember reading a few days ago ... what he got prosecuted for was not fitting in accordance with MI ....... that is what killed the poor girl

If you cant get the correct parts then do not touch it ........ Forget some poor customer needing there heating on ........ if the casing had a hole in it you would not fit it and this is no different

Unless the manufacture says its the correct seal then its not, as has been said there are many different types of orings and your o ring from down the local shop could dry out 6 months down the line ...

Im hardly ever with BG but on this one the guy has made the correct shout

Of course life should never be under threat, from any appliance or installation. But an 'O' ring design for Nat Gas should be sourced & fitted. The customer can be fully informed I'm writting. Where's the problem??
Regardless, it has been shown that these are generic parts, just because BG don't have this on their system, doesn't mean the appliance can't be repaired.

The BG slaphead on Watchdog last night was very keen to point out the age of the appliances in question- as if this was their God given right to replace them!! We all know of examples of BG scaring OAPs into replacing a perfectly good boiler, which is plain shocking!!

Ok heres the problem.

BG have had a few gas leaks recently from engineers using old seals.

We have now been told we can ONLY use manufacturer supplied seals on gas valves.

Common sense out the window unfortunately.
The suits make the job 10 times more difficult.

If i was there id be re-using the old seals if the new ones werent available from ideal.

Is ths scenario pretty much exactly the sme as what was on watchdog last night?

Edit: I couldnt be bothered to read 4 pages of BG bashing and argueing so apologies if my post has repeated what has already been said
