Friends been forced to move or pay more rent

Brits homes are our castle.
We dont want a stranger invading our privacy.
All this 'rent a room' is alien to our way of living.

Some people rent-a-room because they are tight asses and even if they dont need the money to live- they just like money.

This is NOT a way to live at all for a Brit subject.
On the other hand- A brit living in a 3 or 4 bed home all alone- is depriving a family of a right to live together .
So- Those Brits who live in such a home and can quite live in a smaller home should 'downsize' and allow Vlaldimar,Harash, Mohammed, Dimitar, Suresh, Bogdan, Ediz. and Mustapha to live in their homes and move down the road and live in a shoe box.

An estate agent will tell them market value and do all the letting on the Council behalf.

Then the tenants will have to pay up instead of buying flash cars and caravans - just like everyone else.

Thing is though, If these council tenants are on housing benefit, it's the housing benefit bill that goes up. (the tenant ain't about to be bothered is he/she? ) . Anyway, what do estate agents know? All they do is compare what others think the rent should be.
Lets not lose sight of the OP though. I still don't have a problem with tenants being forced to downsize if they no longer need 3 or 4 bedrooms.

Expecting a council tenant to downsize , when they no longer have need of a 4 or 3 bedroomed property seems fair enough to me. Makes perfect sense really.
Gasbanni, not calling you a spreader of untruths, but I used to work for our local council and there's no way prospective tenants would be allowed into a property where council workmen were carrying out repairs/readying the property for the next tenant. ;) ;)

The prospective tenants were accompanied in to the properties with housing officials, apparently they were shown the work that was been done in the property. Guys a chippie Ive known for a few years Ive absolutely no reason to disbelieve him.

Nobody (private or public), should be able to claim any sort of benefit if they have spare bedrooms. They can simply take in lodgers at £65 a week. Refusing to take lodgers is just as bad as refusing to take work.

The problem is that they may end up with someone like you sharing their roof

but both have lived in their homes

I thought you said they lived in council houses?

OH, I SEE, you think the houses that they live in and paid by others are "theirs".

Do you think that people who live in council houses don't consider them to be their homes ?
Many people who have lived in council house have paid for them ten times over.........if you take the price of building a house forty of fifty years ago then they have paid for them ten times over .

You read like a right snob

When I rang one of the friends in question offering to help him move
he seemed a little frustrated to tell me that all the voids where he lives when they came up were all going to immigrants.

Before anyone thinks hes prejudiced two of his wife's sisters are married to ethnic minorities one Asian one Afro Caribbean so he has mixed race members in his family.

So lets hope a nice deserving Rumanian or latvian family gets his house.

Squatters think their place is their home, people who rent think their place is their home, what's your point?

Someone who rented for 40-50 years ago paid more than what the house cost 40-50 years ago, what's your point?

Sorry cant stop, got to go to a fox hunt and then quaff some champaign.

council housing is a social good, it belongs to society, not the occupants.

Now excuse me if I don;t give a sh1te about people living in houses many can't afford and many have a greater need for.

21st century socialism, it's not about what you can do for others, it's about what you can bleed from the state.

VOTE LABOUR!

Ironic how some posters in this one are advocating market value, then decry the market value of some professions they are ill equipped to comment on.

My views on social housing? Well, coming from a family that relied on it 2 generations ago, thank god for it. But it was only a stop gap to enable progression. Sorry, but if you are a social housing tenant and have surplus space. Tough shlt. It should be given to those who need it more than you.

When my mum, nan, and I were sleeping three to a room did we expect to be moved to a bigger place? No. We aspired to get our own place (well my mum did - I was only 5 and didn't have much of a voice).

Yes, your home is your home, but as a social tenant it is there but for the grace of others; and should be available for the greater need. Sorry if that offends you sensibilities, but I like £8 a bottle wines, and Plymouth Navy Strength Gin. If I can't afford them, I don't buy them.

Immigration is a touchy subject. However, I have experienced more native wasters than I have immigrant wasters. So where is the line drawn? Easily. There are surely enough families out there with scumbag children locked up, yet still in houses/flats with the space for said oxygen thieves when they are out on parole. S0d them. they had the same crack at the whip as a lot of us did.

Likewise I know people that have fallen on hard times. They have their own house/mortgage. Do they loose their "home" and take up space in social housing, or do they receive enough benefit to cover the mortgage? Depends on the size and location of the property... In that vein though... I also have experience of a family that moved house at the start of the recession. Sold for 575K, that property now is worth 675K. Where they moved to they are paying £20K an month in mortgage fee's and are effectively camping in the bottom of half of the house because they can't afford to make it habitable. What do people suggest they do? My view is simple... downsize! Vanity has told them to hang in here and live like squatter scum (yes, Squatters are scum).

We have no saviour in the form of our own siblings and offspring as they are too immersed in Facebook and the Kardashians to even realise what is actually going on

Speak for your own family if you must.

But, assuming there is truth in this, whose fault is that?

Slightly off topic, but my local council is proposing that the unemployed will have to pay 25% of their council tax bill. Now just a cursory calculation shows that an unemployed single person on £70 per week, will not be able to afford to eat. I really don't understand how this works, are we really trying to starve people to death in this country? (bear in mind that unemployment benefit is not based on what you have contributed) so you could have been made redundant, divorced, any number of calamities, and now your faced with a death sentence. I am all in favour for people working, but this country seems to have gone back about 150 years recently.

The assumption is, that everyone without a job is idle. It's to make them get off their bums and go out and get a nonexistent job.
