When lighting a NEXT shop we were instructed no more than 2 foot between a lamp but there were 9 AC's on the roof.
Spots are not really for general lighting. Yes bouncing light off the walls it can be done but if you want general light they are not the way to do it.
I use spots at the side of my bed and they work well to read my book with. I also use pods to light dark corners rather than wire in extra lamps in that area. But the idea of a load of lights shinning straight down is not really going to work.

Very true. However, if one is talking about lamps with beam angles of 40°, 50° or even 60°, it is hardly correct,or reasonable, to describe or think of them as 'spots'.
