Considering the size of the Universe, it would be unusual if our planet was the only one supporting life.

Well, if that's the way it is - we are the only life in the universe - then that would be the usual, wouldn't it?

I can see it now ... ships full of aliens heading towards earth, images of dead baby aliens washed up on the moon, Merkel welcoming them with open arms, unrest in District 9, more threads in DIYnot.

And all the trades on this forum up in arms, when the general public discovers that the aliens do plumbing, electrics etc better, and charge less.

Anyway, they wouldn't be the first aliens to arrive, some of the regulars here live on another planet.
