I think I heard that Theresa was expecting the reciprocal rights of existing citizens in dUK and in EU27 to be agreed during June. If true, that's great. I don't know what people have been making such as fuss about.

For some reason the Home Office has been discouraging EU27 citizens from applying for permanent residence

"Theresa May has said she wants the rights of EU citizens in the UK and Britons living on the continent to be resolved early on during Brexit negotiations."
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/201...g-eu-nationals-not-apply-permanent-residence/

"Speaking on March 29, she said: "When I sit around the negotiating table in the months ahead, I will represent every person in the whole United Kingdom – young and old, rich and poor, city, town, country and all the villages and hamlets in between.

"And yes, those EU nationals who have made this country their home. It is my fierce determination to get the right deal for every single person in this country."

"The
letter given to Donald Tusk on March 29 hints at the "early agreement" sought by Mrs May to guarantee the rights of EU citizens living in the UK and those of British nationals living abroad.

The EU27 also wants these rights to be confirmed early on before getting down to other matters.

"The lead negotiator for Brussels insisted “red tape” must not be allowed to stand in the way of EU nationals remaining with full rights.

“Individuals legally residing in the UK today must remain residents after withdrawal, including in those cases when people have no documents to prove residency,” Michel Barnier said.

“The same goes for UK nationals in the 27. No one should be confronted with a mountain of red tape,” he told a State of the Union conference in Florence.

It is said that the dUK has not put forward any proposals on this matter yet, but if Theresa expects it to be resolved by June, she presumably has a draft ready in her handbag. Maybe she didn't want anyone to see them prior to the general election she has called.

I wonder why?

ah yes, here we are. It was at that famous dinner.

"Mrs May told Mr Juncker that she wanted to settle the issue of the rights of the 3million EU migrants living in Britain and the 1million Britons living in the EU by the end of June. "
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/201...street-dinner-jean-claude-juncker-unravelled/
"Her suggestion is reported to have "astonished" Mr Juncker, who accused Mrs May of "underestimating" the complexity of reaching a deal. "I think you underestimate this, Theresa," he is reported to have said."

It must be really easy if she expects to settle it three weeks after the election. Not in a different galaxy at all. She must have had a lot of experience in multinational negotiations affecting the lives of millions to be able to settle it so quickly. All those career diplomats and professional negotiators who said Brexit would be long and difficult must have been wrong. Just as well she sacked them all.

And the gall of that European, disagreeing with her!

juncker the un-elected career paper shuffler/ brown noser

who actually thinks he has got 27 united countries behind him

do you think 52% are enough?

If Theresa thinks she can reach agreement by the end of June, perhaps she has already had secret talks with everyone.

What do you think are her chances?

I thought she was waiting for the EU to confirm that Brits in Europe would be allowed to stay before she "would say" EU migrants would be allowed to stay in Britain - while no one thought for a moment Britain would throw them out. That would not be a British thing to do.

Either way, I shall rely on the Treaty of Windsor 1387.

The lead negotiator for Brussels is Michel Barnier.

What do you think he has said?

(clue: look above)

You are perhaps aware that negotiations have not yet commenced, having been delayed while Theresa got round to writing her Article 50 letter.

Have you read the EU Article 50 guidelines for Brexit negotiations issued on April 29th?

What do they show as the first item of the first phase of negotiations?

In section 8, what does it say will be the first priority for the negotiations?

I have not read it all but Mrs. May said she would not (actually) guarantee EU citizens the right to stay until the EU reciprocated.

the EU has said they insist on reciprocal residency rights for dUK citizens now in EU27, and for EU27 citizens now in dUK.

Any objection?

So what is May moaning about?

No objection from me. Did anyone expect mass deportations both ways?

It was a little while ago that she said it. Now they're both saying the same.

Politics today is a shambles.

Perhaps they are all trying to do a Trump.

Did anyone expect mass deportations both ways?

I don't know. The UK government has been constructing a register of schoolchildren...

"demanding pupils’ passport numbers and even specifically targeting the parents of non-white children."

Bruno Pollett didn't expect to be thrown out. He has been working here for 20 years and has a British wife and child.
"Now a visiting professor of energy and environment at Ulster University and a researcher for a power company in Swansea, he told the Guardian last October that he felt like a second-class citizen, but had decided that in order to protect his family’s right to remain in the country he was reluctantly going to complete the 85-page application form for permanent residency.

He felt confident he would succeed in getting the residency card as he was scrupulous about paperwork and also had gone to the trouble of obtaining 100 pages of HMRC records of tax paid in the UK since he worked in a pub as a student.

On 4 February he received a letter from the Home Office telling him his application was rejected."
