Wiring help for kitchen, slave and master (Lightwave)

Hi,

Looking for guidance on replacing existing switches in our kitchen with some LightwaveRF ones I've bought. (LW420 Dimmer (2 gang) & a LW450 2-Way Dimmer (1 Gang))

It's a bit confusing as it uses a signal wire and if wired up incorrectly could kill the switches.

Would it be a problem using the existing wiring that is in place?

I think you may be out of your depth there, even someone on site may struggle sorting that.
Your 2 way is too be wired the same as the drawing in the wiring diagram
red = grey = S
yellow = brown = L
blue = black

The 1 gang switch will connect to the other switches 2 terminals and not use the "S" terminal.
Not sure why it looks as if you have a red wire in the earth connection.

Why on earth do you want a dimmer in the kitchen? It is a work room with dangerous tools and you (or your wife) needs as much light as possible.

AS far as I can see, from the diagrams, you need a one gang master dimmer and a two gang dimmer that has one half as a slave and one gang as a master.
You've got a two gang master and a one gang slave.
I don't know the Lightwave stuff, but I rather think you will not be able to do it with those dimmers and your wiring.

I think the instructions confuse the issue, you may be better posting the ones supplied with the units.

To me it looks like you have a 2 gang master, that above they call a 2 gang "standard dimmer, that can be used as 1 way or 2 way
and a 1 gang slave that above they refer to as a "2 way" dimmer, that can only be used as the second switch of a 2 way system

The first drawing shows one gang of the "standard" and the second "2 way " dimmer used as 2 way.

The second drawing shows how the other gang of the "standard " dimmer would be used as 1 way

We don't consider it a on/off work environment, especially one that needs 100% brightness for any use. It currently is partly dimmed via other means.. and when we need the light bright, we turn it up. If its just a quick pass through for whatever there is enough light for the need. (Even if from only the fish tank light in the middle if that's the only one on at the time.)
Maybe I should have mentioned it's a kitchen/dining room setup. Kitchen has the 2 gang switch, dining has the 1 gang. We tend to spend 80% of our waking time in the partly split room, one side or the other

Yup, there is a short red used as an earth.. no idea why. The new switches don't require earth at least so those will just be removed.

They said it would be easy, can be wired to your existing wires they said ... looks like I'm going to have to give Lightwave tech support a call Monday! If it requires re-wiring, I think I'll just be returning the lot instead.

Yeah I think you're right, will be easier to figure out like that ... I was thinking I might try that tomorrow. See if there is a way to trace if any run between the two points.

Oh, trust me.. those are the instructions that came with each switch. Scanned them in myself .. Think I've read each one over countless times trying to work it out. Even took a chance calling support today to see if they're the right match together. (Closed on weekends) ... their online vids are of not much help either. Confusing is an understatement.

I'm not sure myself TBH. When I fist looked into buying to try, that seemed to be the pair to match up.

As with all two way switching it is like for like between switches, however with the dimmers switch line and permanent line becomes important. It would seem you have a yellow as permanent line with red on single switch (L on new switch), blue as switched line with black on single switch (will go to sine wave with line through it), and red com on old switch goes to S on new. Not sure I like the mix of colours think I would change them.

Other switch S not used.

However we are assuming with twin and earth red is permanent line, and black switched line, you need to check at the rose if that is the case, also check that the triple and earth simply goes switch to switch, if you need to be 100% ringing out is only way.

By identifying conductors using a multimeter, which is an essential tool to have as soon as you decide to start doing electrical work.

Why?

You've got a two gang master and a one gang slave.

That will work - there's no reason why the master has to be at any "end", specifically.
