The coroner's report into Lakanal House had recommended regulations be updated, and called for developers refurbishing high-rise blocks to be encouraged to install sprinkler systems....

Following the fire, the group posted: “All our warnings fell on deaf ears and we predicted that a catastrophe like this was inevitable and just a matter of time.”

"Gavin Barwell, the Prime Minister’s new chief of staff, failed to give the go-ahead to a safety review during his tenure as housing minister, despite it already having been delayed for years.

His predecessor as housing minister Brandon Lewis declined to bring in regulation forcing developers to fit sprinklers because he said it was not the Government's responsibility."

What the tories are arguing that the free market and self regulation will decide how best to answer these questions on fire safety. I wonder if we deregulated car manufacturing and safety - would we have safe cars on the road? Why don't we end MOT - if you want a safe car then it's your decision.

What all these bozos fail to understand is externalities.

Nobody cares what the extreme left think, you're a freak show, the only way you'd get what you want in this country is at gunpoint.

@Kankerot: No, in my reply I did suggest turning electrical power off before tackling any electrical fires with water.

I will accept that as I was not at the scene, who knows if this bloke may have been woken up by the fire in his kitchen, by which time it may have taken a good hold and he was unable to tackle it himself, but I can't for the life of me understand why he then decides to save his belongings.

The new windows fitted to the flats ( . of the exterior of Grenfell Tower last year, installing cladding and new windows, .... Harley Facades Limited ) seem to have played a major part in the disaster.

Comments were made that if the windows had been closed then the fire from the burning cladding would not have entered the flats.

The question is therefore did the new windows have plastic frames and did the frames melt allowing the glass to fall out.

Theresa, Theresa, Theresa. You really need to get out more and learn about how things work.
It is a sign of a feeble mind that all you have left is foaming at the mouth arguments.

He's a lefty (lol how did you get to that conclusion) - suffering from heat stroke?

Please try harder Theresa.

true it is becoming a political issue rather than finding the truth behind the cause. Some of the residents are becoming restless and angry, like it is the PM's fault and asking her to resign, we live in a real world, where things take a while, they need to be housed locally, like there are 120 empty properties waiting for them

I do not like the ugly scenes of people charging into the council offices. Emotions are running high and there doesn't seem to be a great deal of coordination and its been left to charities to make provisions. There was a great emergency response but there seems to be no disaster response to deal with so many people needing to be housed and some organisation to manage it all.

With so many tower blocks was there even a plan for such a catastrophe? It seems not judging by the response by local and central government.

A competent leader would have given direction, co-ordinated a response - they don't have to show up but they do have to show action and purpose.

"Volunteer Swarzy Macaly, who is helping to co-ordinate the emergency effort following the fire at Grenfell Tower, says the images of angry crowds are not a "true reflection" of how people are responding.

She told the BBC: "All over the news are riots and (people) kicking down doors. That is not a true reflection.

"If you are on the ground, you know what the community spirit is. Yes people are angry, but people are loving.

"I haven't seen any council members, we're doing this very organically. But we're doing our best to lead a community where we're still mourning." "

I am all for protest - (hey we are supposed to live in a freedom loving democracy) but unfortunately then they can be hijacked by a minority.

Sometimes it is hard to put yourself in their shoes, may be your feet are much too bigger!
But there has been no early response from the council leaders, they are ever so quick to send you summons and demand notices if your payments and fines are late!

some of the "council leaders" have probably been told to shut their mouths and keep their stupid heads down.

Saying they didn't install sprinklers because some of the tenants might not have liked it was especially crass.

yup, its like my tenants they don't like the smoke detector going off when cooking smoke causing foods, and so every week I check and find battery has been disconnected, when I ask who is responsible for this? they all node I don't know, there are three households living there, now they realise how important it is not to remove battery from such detectors, but to overcome this problem, which I know is irritating, I have now modified that detector where a push button silences the piercing beeps for 5 minutes, and they are ever so happy with this arrangement now. The detector reactivates automatically after this delay.

(option to install a mains driven smoke detector is also being looked at, problem is there is no live present in the kitchen rose unless I run a surface wiring in a plastic trunking)

They can be annoying for some,Have you considered a heat activated mains alarm ?
This is just outside the kitchen in a lobby and there is another one after this in the Dinning room, the kitchen one is now a heat detector, but I am a bit sceptical about heat detectors, how long do they take to respond after a fire has broken up, whereas smoke detectors are relatively quick in early detection.
