It's a serious post ........I was told on Saturday night by a friend this....... it's paraphrased.

Basically he was overtaking a car going up hill on a road I know, where it's two lanes going up the hill and one going down, the two acending lanes are seperated from the decending lane by double solid white lines.

He pulls in to the second lane to overtake going up the hill as he's parallel with the car he's overtaking a four by four pulls out over the double solid white lines in front of him !...he told me he averted a head on by inches........ literally ..... his wife said to him him
" Were we nearly killed then ?" He answered "Yes."

He then said " I'm never going in an overtaking Lane like that again ......you could die by some idiot's actions"

Have you ever followed a vehicle that pulls over a solid white line to overtake someone ? I've seen it several times ......The lesson for me is I never tied that action of some idiot breaking the highway code to me and to be honest I've used that outside lane regularly ....never thinking someone would pull out from the other lane even though I've seen it done !! I personally intend to be patient. It's your choice what you do.

I know I need to read the current version ! You can download it here.

err... that's what solid lines mean. surely if you have passed your DT then you should know that, and no, you never blindly follow what the d******d in front of you does.

Whose said anyone follows someone doing that ?????? I'm saying I've seen vehicles in front of me do it ....not that I followed them !!!!!!!

I'm saying even though I've seen it done, when I'm in the other lane coming the other way I've assumed no one would do it ! But having g seen it do I should have connected the two.

Read it properly !!

TBH GB, your post is not going to make 1 iota of difference, those that ignore the HC and cross over solid white lines in that situation will continue to do so.

Being patient (adjective,not noun!)on the roads....Great idea.

Sorry but the lesson is not to go over the crest of a hill relying on something you can't see not being there. Either that or he could see the 4x4 and failed to anticipate that he might overtake irrelevant of the lines. Its the same with humps and bridges always keep well over if you can't see its clear over the crest.

Even with a motorbike or powerful car you need at least 3 times the space from your return space, to be clear to account for the moving speed.

It can be legal to cross solid white lines:
- passing a cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle (who is doing less than 10mph)
- passing a stationary vehicle.
- making a turn

You can be the bestest driver/rider in the whole world but it doesn't stop you becoming the victim of someone else's poor driving.

You can minimise the risks using techniques like defensive driving/riding & no one is above further training no matter how long they've been driving. Why not look into an assesment drive with your local IAM or ROSPA or even booking a session with your local driving school. Although there are many routes that cost £money there's a lot of us out there willing to do it for nothing more than any expense incurred & the odd coffee in a cafe somewhere and we're not all anally retentive arseholes who preach the Highway Code chapter & verse either.

you an observer DL?

I used to train observers & helped write the book on how to be a good observer, but not any more, that world really is full of anally retentive Highway Code preachers.

Nowadays I pick up a few from casual conversations, trusted referrers & the odd one who I insist they spend a few hours with me or I'll set fire to their car/bike & no one will ever find me guilty :)

A few local ADI's send there worst case scenario's to me & I like that. I've met some wonderfull people & some have even gone on to share my values & become great drivers or riders.

I had a Xmas card this year from a young lady who failed her test 3x due mainly to nerves, we got her passed on her 4th attempt a few years ago with only 2 minors & most of ther thank you is that now she can control her nerves her career has really took off.

I don't do it to feed a massive ego, I've never done it for a living & I don't do it 'cos I'm some kind of warrior, I just do it because I enjoy it.

It seems as if at least 50% of drivers cannot stick to the speed limit or stay back more than half a car length, never mind do anything "advanced" in a motor vehicle.
