Hello,

Was wondering if anyone could help me with a wiring issue I've been having for a few weeks now.

I moved into my new home last year and just started getting round to changing the light fittings. Downstairs was easy, all blue and brown to blue and brown.

Now I've started to do the upstairs lights I'm having trouble getting the light on with all the other lights working up stairs too.

This is the wiring set up I have at the moment the light is constantly on and only one other light works upstairs.

How do I get the light to switch on and off and the other lights to work properly.

Can anyone please help me figure out what the hell I've done.

Thanks
Lewis

One of those cables goes to the switch.

Are you able to go in the loft, and trace which cable that is?

(I could guess, but best not to.)

Hey sparkwright,

If I found out which wire it was would that help all the other lights come back on?

Thanks

Is all the wiring on the lights you have already done as bad as the picture? What a mess.

There should be no copper visible except perhaps a little of the bare earth wires which should be covered in green and yellow sleeving.

you really shouldn't be changing lights if you are going to leave that much copper sticking out.

someone will get a shock off them metal lights

You shouldn't be allowed anywhere near electrical wiring if that is your effort there.

Hi Lewis,

Were the two black wires that are together in your old light fitting like that already? If so, keep them together as they are. You should push them in further with no copper showing though.

Put the three red wires together in the white chock block, again with no copper showing.

The other black wire goes into the live of the light fitting. This should have a bit of red sleeving or red tape on it to indicate switch live. Again with no copper showing.

Finally, all the earth wires need to have yellow and green sleeving on them. Is the new light fitting metal with a lug for the centre of the brown chock block? If so, that MUST be reattached so the fitting is earthed.

My advice is only speculation at the moment. If the two black wires were NOT together you need to find out which cable goes to the switch. Once that is known, people can help you.

Regards,
Huggybear.

Yes, it would.

And we can advise you on how to connect the wires in a safe, tidy, professional manner - as the connections are very dangerous at the moment.
