Street Party Madness

... but Bodd,

you say you have travelled all over the world, lived in Australia and only came back because you didn't like it there.

Do you not see the irony?
Isn't it amazing how many people who have enjoyed freedom of movement themselves want it now to be denied to others (n)

We have to remind ourselves what the lockdown is for. It isn't to stop people catching the virus and reduce the death rate. It is to slow the progress of the virus to avoid more people needing treatment for severe symptoms, than the NHS can cope with. The unavoidable deaths being prevented are those who the NHS could not treat due to capacity issues. We appear to have peaked without overwhelming the NHS.

Sadly, until there are better drugs, if the virus has got your number, its got your number. If you are a high risk person then you need to keep isolated. There are a few things we could have done early on. But lockdown earlier wouldn't have made any difference. The issue was importing the virus and repatriating infected people.

Germany isn't unexplained. The low death rate is largely down to the avg. age of the person catching it. They have done a better job of keeping the old people isolated. Avg age of Covid patient in Germany is 49 vs 62 elsewhere. That makes a massive difference to mortality.

Middle of last week Trelisk hospital (Truro) had 16 covid patients, very low numbers in this part of the world still.

And there was me thinking it was because VW were doing the testing.

R5L this morning. A doctor said that, if you need invasive treatment in hospital, your chances are less than 50 / 50.
So, without effective vaccine or treatment, everyone's only hope is not catching it. Even if you do get a hospital bed, there's no guarantee you'll walk out of it later.

Mortality rate is quoted at about 1 to 3%.
For a population of 70 million, that's between 700k and 2.1 million deaths.
So, if we all catch it, that's a lot of direct CV deaths, whether they all occur over the course of the next few weeks, months , or years.
